Manchester viaduct to become an urban ‘sky park’ National Trust says £1.8m Castlefield project will bring green space to the city centre
A disused Manchester viaduct will transform into an urban “sky park” this summer, providing much needed green space to one of Britain’s least verdant city centres.
The National Trust starting work to turn an imposing steel rail viaduct into an urban sky park for Manchester’s historic Castlefield district.
The 330m crossing was constructed in 1892 to carry heavy rail traffic in and out of the nearby Great Northern Warehouse but closed in 1969. It has since stood unused with National Highways undertaking essential repairs and regular maintenance to keep it safe.
The pilot phase of the new park project will see a green space created to stretch half way across the elevation of the viaduct. Trees, flowers and shrubs will be planted to soften the hulking, grey steel work of the industrial structure to help attract wildlife. Manchester high line.

7th March 2022.
