Auction at Christie’s
July 1954
Despite currency restrictions and other irritations of the post-war world, London is still the centre of the art market, and Christie’s is the great focus of that market in London. This is the first set of photographs taken since Christie’s returned to their premises in King Street after German bombs completed gutted the building in 1941, leaving nothing but a shell. This particular auction of furniture, rugs, porcelain and objects of art fetched £22,479 and 9 shillings.
Photo shows: The lady and the dealer. What can I do? If you want to buy, lady, I can’t let it go for a guinea less. I’m doing you a favour as it is. (FOTO:DUKAS/TOPFOTO)

China's fattest man, 225kg Liang Yong, is hospitalised, Chongqing, China - 27 May 2010
CHINA'S FATTEST MAN HOSPITALISED
China's heaviest man has been hospitalised after falling ill.
Liang Yong, of Chongqing is well-known in China for weighing 225kg.
He has been hospitalised after suffering abdominal pain and having difficulty breathing.
Doctors said his heart and lungs are deteriorating and if he does not reduce his weight immediately he will die soon.
Liang's father, Liang Chaozhong, said from the end of April Liang had been finding it harder and harder to breathe.
He added: "His belly abdominal perimeter quickly increased to 1.9m from 1.8m and his face is swollen and his appetite is reduced so much."
Professor Wang Lei of the hospital said Liang's BNP/NT-proBNP number, a typical test for diagnosing the presence and severity of heart failure, is 1611; more than three times that of a normal person.
The hospital has encountered a number of difficulties in order to give proper treatment to Liang due to his super heavy weight and over-sized body.
"Our standard bed is 1.2m wide. When he lies down, a lot of his fat is hanging outside the bed," said Professor Wang.
Medical staff have to use a large trailer to transport Liang to different places in the hospital for checkups, and the trailer has to be pulled by at least two people.
However, Professor Wang said except from drawing blood the hospital can't do the tests it wants to because Liang cannot fit into the scanning machines or other diagnostic equipment.
One doctor commented: "His belly fat is too thick and the ultrasound can't penetrate the fat layer. This is the first time we ever met this."
Also, as the medication dosages are prescribed according to the patient's weight, doctors were not sure what amount should be g...

Silk production - from worm to catwalk, southern India - 2010
SILK PRODUCTION - FROM WORM TO CATWALK
For many silk - the Queen of all fabrics - spells luxury, elegance, class and comfort.
But for hundreds of thousands of people in India it is something much more mundane but infinitely important - a vital life line.
An estimated 700,000 people are involved in various sericulture (silk production) activities in India.
Half of all the silk produced in India comes from the region of Karnataka where a sub-tropical climate allows for year-round production.
In 2007-08 India exported more than GBP 400 million of raw silk, carpets and ready made garments.
In 2007 alone it produced 18,320 metric tonnes of raw silk, making it the second a largest silk producer in the world.
It is second only behind China, which produced 108,420 metric tonnes of raw silk in the same period.
While the difference is vast, India's contribution is even more impressive considering that much of its production is done using outdated tools or by hand.
Ultimately, however, poor technology and high production costs undermine the vital role played by sericulture in improving India's rural economy.
The Worm
The Silkworm Seed Production Centre in Mysore is run by Professor N.M. Biram Saheb.
He explains that the Indian government pioneered the provision of disease free lays of eggs as a way of improving yields without increasing start-up costs
The practice means that farmers are provided with a steady stream of healthy silkworm eggs.
It is deep in the seed production centre where the 'work' of creating these eggs takes place - in darkened rooms where moths are laid out on newspaper in racks of plastic trays.
Powerhouses of the silk industry they may be, but in reality they are pale weaklings whose only purpose is to mat...

Kate & William: A Very Public Love Story graphic novel, Britain - 03 Feb 2011

Kate Middleton and Prince William discuss his RAF nickname
Kate & William: The Comic Book
It will be this year's fairytale wedding, but now the story of Prince William and Kate Middleton's courtship has been turned into a comic book.
A British publisher has produced a dramatic retelling of the lives of the couple in a new graphic novel A Very Public Love Story.
Written by English graphic novelist Rich Johnston, it tells the life story of the happy couple in two directions.
The front half of the book, drawn by the Welsh artist Mike Collins, tells Kate's story in the manner of a 1970's girls comic book, with some very modern touches. Each event is given added depth and resonance by the use of a fictional diary.
The back half, drawn by the Scottish artist Gary Erskine is more bombastic, following William from the rugby pitches of Eton to army officer training at Sandhurst before his army and RAF exploits, all the time narrated by newspaper headlines and mission briefings in a style more familiar to the army and sports comics for boys.
The reputation of comic books has been growing for the last twenty years, no longer the preserve of the childish joke or the American superhero, everything from political melodrama to cookbooks have found expression in comic books.
And now Markosia Enterprises have found a way to tell this story in a very different way, a dramatic biography with two separate stories told from either end of the comic, coming together in the middle, a fictional look at the wedding day itself, with a kiss. How could it end any other way?
Harry Markos, owner of Markosia, says: "We are very proud of the work. We used a British writer and artists to create the graphic novel and we hope that it will stand the test of time.
"We want ...

"Are you OK buddy?" a seagull seems to be saying as it inpects a poorly California sea lion resting on the beach.
Thankfully, the concerned bird wasn't the only one on hand to aid the stricken mammal.
A team from The Marine Mammal Center rehabilitation facility attended the scene at Moss Landing, California and carried out a rescue.
Wildlife photographer Michael Yang captured the incident as the seven-person team cautiously approached the sea lion, before carrying it away to be treated.
Laura Sherr, of the Marine Mammal Center, said: "This animal has been named is Karen Light, as we name all our patients, and was rescued due to lethargy, shaking, underweight, and allowing people to approach."
