100 BRITISH BRIDES ARRIVE IN AUSTRALIA BY AIRCRAFT CARRIER - CARRYING HIS BRIDE ACROSS THE DECK.
When the aircraft carrier "Indefatigable" docked in Sydney, Australia, she carried instead of aircraft, more than 100 British brides of Australian servicemen who had travelled from England to join their husbands. All the brides had a good trip and had no complaints to make about their "liner".Many excited husbands rushed aboard to claim their wives, and the first husband to arrive was "chaired" along the deck by the brides, in token of their appreciation of his enterprise.

GERMAN WOMAN DOCTOR AND NURSE TO DIE FOR MURDER OF HUNDREDS OF ASYLUM PATIENTS.
Hilde Vernicke, 47 year old doctor, and Helene Winczorek, a nurse aged 42, have been sentenced to death by a German court for the murder of insane patients at Obrawaldo Sanatorium in 1943 and 1944.
Wericke was found guilty in more than 600 cases, Winczorek in 40. The two women will be exectued after the sentences have been approved by the Allied authorities.

LIFE IN THE OLDGIRL , YET
Vintage cars that shattered the complacency of the placid late Victorians, shook their old chassis with goggled drivers at the tiller set off from the magazine in Hyde Park, London, on the Royal automobile clubs veteran car run to Brighton. Several models believed to be the sole representatives of their kind in existence, were among the unusually large entry of 130 cars.
The veterans got away to an early start, but organisers of the run-probably with due respect for age-warned that entrants could not be expected to pass checking point earlier than scheduled times.

THE OLDEST BOATS IN THE WORLD
Caesar describes , in De Bello Civili , the little boats '' with sides of plaited willow '' which he had made for his campaign on Spain , modelling them on the '' Coracles '' he had found being used in the barbarians in England , who used them for fishing . And the coracle or '' Currach '' is mentioned in the lives of Saint Patrick and Saint Columba , and in the accounts of their travels recorded by the Scots and Picts .
The craft of Coracle fishing is still being practiced on the rivers Teifi and Towy in south Wales , has changed little in its essentials since the early Iron Age . But now , like many other traditional crafts , it is threatened with extinction .

Unit Commander Doreen Pennell, 24 , of Birmingham was today (Saturday) declared the winner of the Women's Junior Air Corps 'Flight to Australia' competition, the final judging of which took place this afternoon in the Victoria League House, Westminster, London. Miss Pennell wins a flight to Australia, a three week air tour of the different States, some clothing and her travelling luggage. Of many entrants all over Britain, seven finalists were selected on the basis of written essays and examinations of general knowledge. Health, air ability, personality, character and education - prime considerations - helped choose Doreen Penell from among the select seven to make the 'prize flight'.

SINGER OFF TO PARIS TO APPEAR ON FRENCH TELEVISION

Bound for Paris to appear on French television and to spend a belated honeymoon, singer Morgan Davies and his wife, Joy Turpin, left Victoria Station, London, today (Wednesday). Morgan who was principal baritone at Covent Garden Opera House before the war, sings Tonio in the BBC television version of 'Pagliacci', which is to be broadcast in English from Paris to French viewers on February 6. Davies met his wife when both were playing in the London musical 'Carissima'. They were married last August, but two days after the wedding Davies had to begin a provincial concert tour. As the tour ended, Joy had to start rehearsals for pantomime, Joy's mother Mrs Amy Turpin, accompanied the couple.

The verbal broadsides have shuddered into silence and Southampton is at peace again - college girls and 'townies' have declared an armistice in their battle of beauty.
Audrey Reed, 20 year old vice president of Southampton University College Students' Union, who fired off the wordy warfare, was at the Forum Cinema to see the election of Miss Bunny Terrell as 'queen' of the College Carnival rag scheduled for February 21.
Competing was blonde Malta born Brenda Williams, 19 year old cinema usherette, who fired up when Audrey said she and 349 other girls at the College had decided not to enter the contest because 'we are all so attractive here that we realised the town girls would never stand a chance Audrey and Brenda were the best of friends at the contest, sponsored by the college in aid of charity.

General de Lattre de Tassigny, C in C Land Forces for Western Union, flew to London to attend the marriage of his Aide de Camp, Captain John Smallwood, at Westminster Cathedral, London today (Saturday). The bride is Miss Diana Aileen Romer Turner, 23 of Dorchester.
Capt. Smallwood, who speaks French perfectly, was dropped behind the enemy lines in France and in Asia during the last war. In 1944, at the head of nine Resistance men, he entered Avignon and captured it. His decorations include the Croix de Guerre with three citations and the Resistance Medal.

Winds ruffle charming young Swiss film actress Maria Schell as the leaves Northolt Airport, Middlesex, to return to Zurich to day (Monday) after attending the premiere of the film 'The Angel with the Trumpet' in which she appeared.
Maria, signed by Korda for the future because of her good work in the film, found herself in a peculiar situation.
It is 'so silly' she says to stay in England and be paid for doing no work. Now she goes home because the Labour Ministry says if she is not working she must return to Switzerland.
She will come back to England after staying away the requisite period. Maria, Swiss by nationality, was born in Vienna 24 years ago. Her father, unwilling for her to become an actress, sent her for secretarial training. Within 18 months she was acting in a Swiss film.

PIT-BOY PEER AT LABOOUR PARTY
Mr. JOHN JAMES LAWSON , 68, who received a barony in the dissolution Honours list, arriving at Church house, Westminster, London today for the joint meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party and the national executive.
Mr.Lawson, who was member for the Chester-le-Street division of County Durham from 1919 to 1949, did not contest a seat at the recent general election. He began working the Durham coalfield at the age of 12 and in 1949 became Lieutenant of the County. He held office in 3 socialist governments, most recently as secretary for war from 1945-6. Mr.Lawson gave up his seat in the House of Commons after been appointed vice-chairman of the National Parks commission last December.

BACK FROM THE ANTARTCTIC
After three years among the desolate wastes of the Antarctic, three young British scientists have returned to civilisation.
The relief ship was unable to break through the stiff pack-ice which surrounded the advance base on Stonington island in Marguerite Bay. Rescued had to be achieved by air, and a Norseman aircraft brought them to safety.today, the great adventure over, they landed at London airport.
Although marooned, the British party of 10 had ample food and fuel stocks. Only disappointment was the failure of the relief ship ' John Biscoe ' to make its yearly call with letters.
The scientists investigated the islands weather, minerals, and topography.

SUPPORTING LAW AND ORDER
The Binney Memorial medal for the bravest act in support of law and order during 1949 was pinned on the chest of Mr. Ronald Warlus Sleet of Bethnal Green, London, today in a ceremony at the County Hall, London. Field Marshal Earl Wavel, Lieutenant of the County of London, made the award. Mr. Sleet's act of bravery occurred last August, when he fought burglars in a Bethnal Green home, subduing one of them.

Anita D'Ray, 21 year old film "starlet" is helped into a standard diving suit by leading seamen Frank Frost (left) and Bert Bull (right) aboard the Royal Navy experimental deep sea diving vessel HMS Reclaim at Chatham. Miss D'Ray is the ship's mascot and while on a visit to the ship she was persuaded by the officers and men to try on diving gear. Born in Molesey Surrey, Miss D'Ray began her stage career with the American Red Cross at the age of 14. She joined the Windmill Theatre in 1944 and last year began appearing in films. Aside from her acting career Miss D'Ray's chief interest is flying. Last year she won an air race on the Isle of Wight.

H.M.S Reclaim was commissioned in 1949 and was deep diving and submarine rescue vessel, at that time the only ship in the British navy capable of deep diving operations.
