Photographer Malte Brandenburg said:"Initially these buildings meant a vast improvement of life for the middle class in Berlin. They provided more space and were affordable, didn?t cost much in construction and were built quickly. However with time, these buildings were not really needed anymore by their initial inhabitants. Suddenly they turned into a burden for the city as the urban lifestyle of its citizens changed and efficient and cheap housing was not of real interest anymore for the masses."

A photographer has captured a series of charming photos of Berlin's post-war housing apartment blocks.
The pictures show perfectly symmetrical concrete apartment blocks, pictured against blue skies.
Copenhagen-based photographer Malte Brandenburg, 37, travelled back to his birth place (Berlin) to capture the photo series 'Stacked'.
Malte said: "I wanted to highlight the architectural structure of these buildings rather than their social context. I think by making them comparable you notice that they all have something in common, but that the architects still maintained their individual small little features.
"For me they are not ugly leftovers from past decades in a city?s skyline. I find they tell a story, which is still relevant today, namely the tension between engineering and the human element.

The Aegis Lifeshirt has the appearance of a normal top, however it can inflate automatically or manually as soon as it detects submersion.
The shirt is perfect for those who love surfing, water skiing or canoeing.
The Aegis Lifeshirt was invented by Rosario Poma, who was haunted after his son nearly got dragged out to sea by a strong tide.
Rosario's son was rescued by an on-duty lifeguard, however the event left a strong impression on the entrepreneur, prompting him to invent this light, easily wearable inflatable shirt.

Sinn Féin head office, The Falls. Belfast. Sinn Féin is an Irish republican political party active in Northern Ireland. Sinn Féin is the largest group in the Republican wing of Irish nationalism and is closely associated with the Provisional IRA, however, the SF leadership has denied these claims. A republican document of the early 1980s states, "Both Sinn Féin and the IRA play different but converging roles in the war of national liberation. The Irish Republican Army wages an armed campaign... Sinn Féin maintains the propaganda war and is the public and political voice of the movement"

Tesfale sits on his bed in a dormitory that sleeps 12 boys. With the school in a dire state of funding, the children suffer from poor food provision, leading to lethargy and tiredness. Coupled with their entrapment on the campus due to their condition, this means that many of the children spend large amounts of the day lying on their beds. There are, however, some opportunities to be active. Tesfale is an avid Manchester United football supporter. When the other boys are feeling up to it, they enjoy bouts of 5-a-side football on the dusty pitch, using a ball equipped with a small bell inside

MONGOLIA / Bayantal / 2008. Abandoned Soviet military housings after the collapse of the USSR. The Soviet influence in Mongolia stretched back to the days of Tsarist Russia and developed in strength after the Revolution and was significant until the end of the Cold War. Between 1987 and 1992, however, the Soviets withdrew their troops as well as the technical and financial assistance that they had given to the country.
Eric Lusito - Traces of the Soviet Empire
FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/p8ug
These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.
The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".
What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

Photos highlight the spread of ebola, Liberia, Aug 2014

Family members and loved ones come to witness the burial of the Ebola victim. However, because of the risk, they stay far from the grave and are instructed not to visit for at least a year. Unification Town, Liberia. 2014-08-30 11
Haunting Photos Highlight The Ebola Crisis In Liberia
Kieran Kesner is a 23-year-old photojournalist who spent eight days covering the the plight of those infected with Ebola in Liberia.
His striking photographs capture the plight of the Liberian community, who can only hope and pray not to catch the devastating disease.
During his stay Kesner also photographed the burial teams and the MSF doctors (Doctors without Borders).
The current outbreak in West Africa is the largest and most severe outbreak of Ebola since the virus was first discovered in 1976.
Since the first case was noted in March 2014, there have been more cases and deaths than previous outbreaks combined; the diseases has already taken over 3,000 lives.
On August 27, 2014 Kesner boarded Delta airlines flight 2608 ready to begin his first international assignment.
"After four layovers, I arrived at the airport in Liberia. The plane came to a rough landing as it skidded to a stop on the decaying runway.
"Upon exiting passengers were met with an army of people rushing to take our temperature with thermometers shaped like guns aimed at our heads. I would soon come to realize these thermometers might as well be real guns pointed to our heads."
After washing his hands with chlorine, Kesner proceeded through the cacophony of customs where his passport was quickly stamped and he was sent on his way.
"Over the next week I would come face to face with Ebola; photographing the sick, dead and every stage of the virus in between. Realizing the severity of this epidemic that sets a country back after steadily making gain...

William*, a 5 year old boy, being treated for cholera a primary health care unit in Torit County by Save the Children and County Health Department staff.
Afisha moves slowly and deliberately between her two children, William and Sarah, who are being treated at a primary health care centre (PHCC) in Torit County, Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan. Afisha seems worn out, but is obviously still concerned about her children and is constantly moving between the pair and vigilantly monitoring them both.
The PHCC has been open in Hiyala, a rural village in Torit County, for several years. Afisha lives about an hourâs walk from the centre, and when her two children fell ill she immediately set off on foot with her 3 year old and 5 year old in tow. Her elderly mother also walked with them down the dusty, uneven road. It was the middle of the night.
Afishaâs experience is not uncommon in South Sudan at the moment, as more and more cases of cholera are being reported throughout the country at an increasingly alarming rate. This was also not Afishaâs only experience of this deadly disease. Afisha had four children, however tragedy struck when her four year old, and her two year old contracted an illness symptomatic of cholera. Unfortunately Afisha was not able to get treatment for her two children who sadly passed away due to the disease.
The times are changing for Afisha and her family, and many other families in the area. Illness is a constant. Given the lack of access to sanitary conditions or clean water, it is not surprising that areas like this are rife with diseases such as cholera. However, with the PHCC within walking distance for ...
