A hungry red squirrel leaps from branch to branch in a flash before returning with a hazelnut for lunch.

Jumping over a metre in front of a sea of yellow autumn beech leaves, it then settles down in the branch of a pine tree to snack.

A short while later, the squirrel then heads to the puddle for a quick drink, studies its reflection and stores its hazelnut in the ground for the coming winter.

Biologist and Wildlife photographer Paul van Hoof, 36, was walking through the woodland in Twente, the Netherlands, when he came across the squirrel.
