Military personnel are providing COVID testing to NHS key workers at sites set up nationwide.
Soldiers from The Grenadier Guards and from The Royal Anglian Regiment have been trained to safely deliver COVID tests as part of government response work, and they are now deployed at a site in Wembley, London.
The site has been set-up in the IKEA carpark in Wembley, and it offers a drive-through facility that can test over 500 NHS personnel a day. Working alongside civilian staff from local authorities, and from Boots and Deloitte, it is a team effort and the military contribution has been welcomed.
Once trained in the process and delivery of safe testing, the Army personnel are uniquely useful in being able to redeploy wherever new sites may be set up. The four-year quest has produced some surprising rediscoveries, including the Ventriloqual Frog from Haiti, capable of throwing its voice, and the Borneo Rainbow Toad, unseen in 87 years, and remarkable new species such as the "Monty Burns Toad" from Colombia which bears a striking similarity with the nefarious villain from the Simpsons.
Moore's fascinating new book, In Search of Lost Frogs, tells the story of the quest - its highs and lows, failures and discoveries, and the campaign's ongoing work - in a 70,000 work narrative wrapped around over 400 striking photographs.
As we lament the rampant loss of species in the midst of the sixth mass extinction - with amphibians at the forefront as the most threatened vertebrate group - Moore believes that hope is as important as despair in motivating people to care. "As conservationists we often get so caught up in communicating what it is that we are losing that we forget to instill a sense of hope," Moore says. "We need to revel in the weird and the wonderful, the maligned and the forgotten, for our world is a richer more wondrous place for them. Stories and images of discovery and rediscovery can help us to reconnect with our inner explorer - they can make us feel part of a bigger, wilder world. Rekindling a connection with the world beyond our concrete boxes is the key to caring about the way we are treating our natural world."
