This weekend, on 15 and 16 October in the first York Unlocked event, 60 historic buildings will open free to the public, with volunteer stewards on hand as guides.
York was arguably Britain's second city at various times between the 10th and early 17th centuries. In 1642, Charles I attempted to escape his London difficulties by establishing his court at the sprawling, picturesque King's Manor in the middle of town, and this will be one of the attractions open this weekend.
Central York is bounded by the longest circuit of medieval city walls in Britain - they run for more than two miles - and parts of them will be in the weekend’s programme.

These stunning images show the result of one man's mission to capture the Northern Lights in all their glory.
Paul Zizka has been shooting the aurora borealis over the last 18 months over Banff National Park, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
His work presents one of the most jaw-dropping galleries of the natural celestial lightshow.
Highlights include aurora and mountains reflected in lakes and, in Paul's favourite image, a great horned owl sitting atop a lone pine tree against the green-tinged skies.
The 34-year-old landscape and adventure photographer says he specialises in photographing in difficult conditions and hard-to-reach places, and this project fulfilled "his passion for documenting the interplay of light and weather in the mountains."

This one off event takes a fresh and ingenious look at the London we pass through every day in a way never seen before, inspired by some of Britain's greatest visionaries from the world of fashion and design. Commissioned as part of the citywide celebrations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, this unique event promises to be another iconic moment for this Summer Like No Other. It forms part of the Mayor of London Presents series of Surprises, which sees world-class artists creating pop-up events and performances springing up at locations both familiar and unusual across London. The Mayor of London Presents programme encompasses hundreds of free cultural events, performances and installations in all 33 boroughs.

This one off event takes a fresh and ingenious look at the London we pass through every day in a way never seen before, inspired by some of Britain's greatest visionaries from the world of fashion and design. Commissioned as part of the citywide celebrations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, this unique event promises to be another iconic moment for this Summer Like No Other. It forms part of the Mayor of London Presents series of Surprises, which sees world-class artists creating pop-up events and performances springing up at locations both familiar and unusual across London. The Mayor of London Presents programme encompasses hundreds of free cultural events, performances and installations in all 33 boroughs.

A Superman fanatic has cosmetic surgery to look like his hero.
Herbert Chavez, 35, started having surgery in 1998 to transform into his heroic alter-ego, Superman.
Mr Chavez who is from the Philippines has had a chin augmentation to give him Superman's iconic cleft; Rhinoplasty to transform his Asian nose into one similar to actor Christopher Reeves; silicone injections into his lips to make them fuller and thigh implants to make his legs appear more muscular.
He has also had liposuction on his stomach and plans for more surgery on his abdomen to increase his similarity to the Man of Steel.
Mr Chavez said: "I have been a life-long fan of Superman after being given the costume when I was a child.
"In 1990 after I started working I could afford to buy the Superman figurines which I have been collecting for over 20 years."
Mr Chavez has a colossal collection of Superman memorabilia; some is still in the original packaging in order to maintain its collector's value.
In his home in Calamba City, south of the capital, Manila his house is filled to the brim with life-size statues, action figures, clothing, comics and posters.
He is also a celebrity in his hometown and his full-time profession is a 'pageant trainer', after winning the pageant: 'Mr Hero'.
Mr Chavez has appeared on a video report on the Philippines' Bandila news where a psychiatrist explained that Mr Chavez could be suffering from body dysmorphic disorder, meaning that he is obsessed with making cosmetic changes to his body.
Herbert has always worked in the comic book industry; one of his jobs was selling comic book hero's costumes. Superman has become part of his life and he is determined to carry on with cosmetic procedures to look even more l...
