'Because secondhand is feckin' grand': how clothes swapping became huge in Ireland
After seeing the consequences of fast fashion, one woman is on a mission to change the way we think about repurposing clothes.
Mary Fleming, now 34, is leading a campaign to prevent waste by swapping, reusing, repairing and repurposing clothes under the inimitable exhortation: "Because secondhand is feckin' grand".
She is the founder of Change Clothes, a non-profit that hosts a swap shop in Dublin and runs pop-up outlets and workshops across Ireland. It lets people rent, exchange and buy used clothes and gives tutorials in mending and upcycling frayed garments.

Swingers Convention
Even retail therapy is not overlooked during the convention. The erotic market place is open every day in the hotel and offers a mind warping array of everything the party minded polyamorist could need, from masks, intimate shaving gadgets, macrame floggers, vibrators and corsets, to gauzy wisps of underwear and the essential bath time toy - a vibrating rubber duck.

Secrecy
A reception for couples from Texas and Louisiana is held on the hotel pool deck, giving people the chance to network with other Lifestylers from their area. Swinging can be an expensive hobby if you have to advertise for partners on the internet and then travel several hundred miles to meet them. ÒI've been surprised at how many people there are here who live maybe half an hour's drive from me,Ó says Kelly Carpenter, 39, from San Antonio. ÒIt would make life a lot easier if we had a regular local couple we could party with once a week. On the other hand, we have to be very careful about swinging locally because if my family or work colleagues found out, there would be trouble. I work with children, and people are so ignorant about what we do that I'd probably lose my job. I know of a woman who posted a nude photograph of herself and her husband on a swingers internet chat room, saying that they were looking for partners. Someone from her work came across the site, downloaded her picture and sent it via e-mail to everyone in her office. She had to resign from her job because of someone's idea of a joke, but if she had been discovered having an affair, it would have been totally accepted. People are extremely judgmental about us, perhaps because they are threatened by the freedom we seem to have.Ó

Women rule
A ÔHot Buns' competition at the Masquerade Ball on the final night of the convention allows the men to grab some of the limelight, but it is the women who appear to make the running in the Lifestyle community. ÒI would estimate that 90% of couples get into swinging at the man's prompting,Ó says organiser Bob Hannaford, ÒUsually the women aren't keen at first, they imagine that it is a very macho scene which exploits the female participants. Once they've had that first experience, they realise that they can call the shots. Their husbands are living the dream of millions of men across the world, and they're not going to force their partner into anything that would jeopardise that, so the ladies lay down the rules. It just wouldn't work any other way.Ó

Exhibitionism
Barbara ÔBarbi' Leigh, from Alabama, who styles herself as the ÔWorld's Biggest Exhibitionist' and has appeared on the Oprah and Jerry Springer shows, demonstrates the art of Ôstripping for your man' at the Gold Club strip joint in the French Quarter. It's 1pm and the women are all seated downstairs, listening with rapt attention, while the men are banished to the upstairs balconies. Barbi warns the ladies not to throw their panties into the crowd (they'll never get them back), to smile, make eye contact, choose the right music to suit their mood, and the right outfit to maximise the visual impact. Then she invites as many of the women as would like, to put her theory into practice and dance for their man, or someone else's. No encouragement is needed, the men pour back downstairs and soon the club podiums are thronged with topless ladies, gyrating to ÔYou Can Leave Your Hat on.' ÒLet them see your piercings,Ó shrieks Barbi, over the music, ÒThat little bit of sparkle between your legs will get people's attention and then you can work them up into a frenzy.Ó

Swingers Convention
Beginners
Many of the couples at the convention are new to the swinging scene, and quite nervous when they arrive. ÒYou can always tell the virgins, Ò says organiser Bob Hannaford, ÒThey're the ones who look scared. They might never have swung before the convention, so they're throwing themselves in at the deep end, or hoping they'll get lost in the crowd! The key is to relax and smile. If you smile, people will stop and say hello to you. You also have to let your defences down and realise that not everyone is going to try and get you into bed, a lot of them just want to meet liberal, open minded people to socialise with. Most people take a while to really get into swinging. The average time it takes from a couple mentioning it to each other to them actually experimenting is around 18 months. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I don't know many people who have gone back to monogamy once they've tried it.Ó

Safe Sex
Opinions differ as to the importance of safe sex within the swinging community. Statistics suggest that the instances of STDs amongst Lifestylers are very low, but no specific study has been mounted into the subject, and the inherent secrecy which cloaks the community makes it impossible to assess the situation. Many of the older couples attending the convention were open in admitting that they didn't use condoms. ÒWe only party with middle class educated people who don't have drug habits, and we don't indulge in anal sex,Ó says Carrie, 52, from Arkansas, Òmany of our trading partners are doctors and if they are happy to go unprotected, then I don't think we should worry. Besides, if we caught AIDS at our age, it wouldn't be such a disaster, the treatments now are very successful.Ó
Meanwhile, the younger age groups are more careful. ÒWe always use condoms,Ó says Annie, 28, from New Orleans, ÒIt might interrupt the flow of events a bit, and it is difficult if you get into a large group situation, but nothing would induce me to have unprotected sex with a strange partner.Ó

Swingers Convention
Anti-body fascism
12 noon Scarlet's Cabaret on Bourbon Street, a Ôgentleman's strip club', is host to the convention's ÔWet Tease Ô contest. Mirror walled, dimly lit and throbbing to the beat of Nelly's ÔIt's Getting Hot in Herr', the club is the perfect setting for this elaboration on the normal wet t-shirt competition. There are no hands-off rules for the judges, in fact hands have a license to be everywhere, and each lady has to dance three times, losing their clothes as they go. Anyone with an exhibitionist streak can enter and strut their slinky stuff. ÒMaybe I should be leaving it to the 25 year olds,Ó says Jesse Roberts, retired, from Milwaukee, Òbut I don't want to die without having entered one of these contests, so I'm getting up there, walking stick and all. I just hope it's good booty music.Ó If this convention is a fair representation of the swinging community's philosophy and ethos, they are refreshingly open in their attitude to body size and shape. ÒBody fascism has no place within the Lifestyle,Ò says housewife Linda Benson, 34, from Florida, ÒPeople are celebrated for their personality and their enthusiasm in embracing the culture. That's what attracts a lot of the women, there's very little bitchiness. If you sag a bit or weigh a few pounds more than you should, you're not made to feel unattractive, everyone just accepts you as you are.Ó

Changes to social life
Tricia and Simon Davis, 29 & 46, from Houston, Texas. Married for 9 years, swinging for 8, she is an office worker, he is a construction supervisor.
ÒThis is our first convention, and we would definitely do it again, it's great to meet so many other lifestylers. We belong to a club, in Houston, and quite a few of the other members have come along too, which made it a bit less scary to begin with. We swing every weekend, so it's become a bit of a habit. I'm afraid to say that we don't have any straight, or Ôvanilla' friends any more, we can't be ourselves around them, so what's the point? In the beginning, we had lots of rules , but they're all out of the window now. Our needs and desires change, so there doesn't seem much point in being rigid. As long as we are honest with each other, problems shouldn't arise. I know couples who have tried swinging because their marriages were rocky, and it didn't help them at all, it'll blow your relationship apart if it isn't strong. If you have a good marriage, swinging will only enhance it - the sex will be better because you can appreciate your partner through other people's eyes, and your friendship will be better because of all the talking you have to do.Ó

Swingers Convention
The beauty of this convention is that the Lifestylers don't have to wait for the cover of night to reveal their inner swinger, voyeur or exhibitionist. New Orleans is on full party alert status Ôcode red' every hour of every day, and there isn't much that the Big Easy hasn't already seen. The clubs and bars of the French Quarter host loud, exuberant and very friendly afternoon parties for the swingers throughout the 5 days - a kind of convention foreplay which titillates the crowds in preparation for an evening of abandon. Attendees wear wristbands which gain them entry to these receptions, and once inside, they can signal their availability to each other by choosing different coloured straws for their drinks. A black straw shows that you are off limits, a pink straw means you are bisexual. If you're ambivalent about things, you choose a clear straw, but if you're looking for all out partner swapping, yellow is your colour. Several yellow straws............just use your imagination.

Midnight in the Harem Room at the Astor Hotel
The lift doors open on the second floor, where the hospitality suites are located, and a sea of swingers descends on the themed rooms, which cater to a variety of sensual tastes. Couples first enter a dimly-lit cloak room, where they can leave their clothing and valuables. ÒI always carry an emergency kit with me,Ó explains nursing aide Cecilia, 38, a veteran conventioneer from Mississippi, ÒIt contains my room key, cards with my personal details on, some condoms, a tube of lube, headache tablets, mints and some Viagra, just in case.Ó The harem, or group sex room which leads off the cloakroom, is lined wall to wall with mattresses, dressed with gauzy curtains and low pink lighting. The only rule is that you ask before you join in. At any time, there might be up to 30 couples in here, and plenty of voyeurs watching. On a cautionary note, this was overheard in the harem room ÒCome along Richard, we're leaving. I've just spotted my parents.Ó
If group action doesn't tickle your fancy, you can take your pick from the Dark Room, where participants have to find their way to someone they like the feel of in complete darkness, two Interracial Rooms, the Sybian room, where women can try the world's scariest looking plug-in multi speed vibrator, and the Love Swing - which apparently allows for greater G-Spot stimulation by lifting your partner into exactly the right position for entry. Then, of course, there's the dungeon, complete with stocks, whips, paddles, nipple clamps, electrodes.....etc....etc
