Real Women vs. Barbie: Artist Shows Shocking Differences
Real Women vs. Barbie: Artist Shows Shocking Differences

From her extraordinarily long legs to her unrealistically tiny waist, the world's most famous doll has often come under scrutiny from women's groups who say it promotes an unhealthy idea of body image in girls.

And now it seems their claims have been proven by illustrator Nickolay Lamm, who has taken his investigation of Barbie's unlikely physical appearance a step further, showing what the Barbie toy would look like if she had normal measurements.

Scaled up to human size, Barbie dolls would have unrealistic measurements of an 18" waist, 33" hips and a 36" bust compared with the typical 19-year-old girl's 31" waist, 33" hips and a 32" bust.

Lamm has highlighted the discrepancies by comparing Barbie's body side-by-side to the mockup of a realistic version, based on CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) measurements of the average 19-year-old American girl.

The images were created by modeling the average sized woman to measurements of the average 19-year-old girl and from there a 3D model was constructed.

Once the 3D model was printed, photos of Barbie and the printed model were taken and Photoshop was applied to the 3D printed model to make it look like a Barbie doll.

Lamm said: "My last Barbie project got a lot of criticism because Barbie is a toy and people argued that a toy can't do any harm.

"However, if we criticise skinny models, we should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls as well. Furthermore, a realistically proportioned Barbie actually looks pretty good in the pictures I produced.

"So, if there's even a small chance of Barbie in its pres...

Dr. Felipe Galvan from the Mexican Institute of Sciences records the measurements of the unusual catch
    Rare 'Cyclops' Shark Found
The one-eyed albino shark "is not a fake" says experts.

These images show what appears to be a shark with one eye in the centre of its face.

The albino Cyclops fetus was cut from its mother's tummy, a pregnant bull shark in the middle of the Gulf of California.

Pisces Fleet Sportfishing posted pictures of the unusual bull shark on their blog where many sceptics believed it to be a hoax telling the Global Sportfishing Charters that a "cabbage patch doll must be missing an eye somewhere" or the images were photo-shopped.

However, experts have examined the shark and the creature is genuine, although it is unlikely it would have survived after birth the MSNBC reported.

Shark expert Felipe Galvan Magana of Mexico's Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias del Mar said: "This is extremely rare. As far as I know, less than 50 examples of an abnormality like this have been recorded."

The shark's condition is known as cyclopia and is a rare congenital disorder that occurs within the spectrum of the brain and face. It is characterised by the failure of the front portion of the brain to properly divide the orbits of the eye into two cavities.
In severe cases it can result in miscarriage or stillbirth.

Mr Magana went on to add: "The water in the Sea of Cortez is one of the cleanest in the world, so it is not likely that this is a factor."
