Boris Johnson’s RAF Voyager plane takes to the skies for first time after controversial £900,000 paint job. Following the arrival of the RAF VIP Voyager “Vespina” at its base at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on Thursday 25th June 2021, the aircraft undertook its first operational tasking today Friday 26th June 2021, by tanking RAF Lightning and Typhoon fighters during Exercise CRIMSON OCEAN.

After several weeks repainting, the Voyager was confirmed ready to undertake its full operational role of Air-to-Air Refuelling and personnel transport alongside the rest of the RAF Voyager fleet. Taking off from RAF Brize Norton, the aircraft spent most of the day airborne to provide several refuelling stops for the fighters taking part in the joint RAF and Royal Navy exercise. This refuelliung occured off the North East coast of the United Kingdom.

Exercise CRIMSON OCEAN allows the Royal Navy and RAF to train and hone their ability to deliver routine fighter and helicopter operations in a range of environments from the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. Lightning aircraft from 617 Squadron have been onboard the carrier since 9 July when they left their base at RAF Marham in Norfolk.

The aircraft, known as Vespina is also referred to as 'ZZ336', its military registration number, was previously visually indistinguishable from the rest of the RAF Voyager Fleet. The new paint scheme will better reflect its VIP mission and contribution to ‘Global Britain’. The paintwork concludes a refurbishment stemming from the 2015 SDSR.

THE TYPHOON WAS FROM 9 SQN BASED AT RAF LOSSIEMOUTH. F35 AIRCRAFT FROM 617 SQN, RAF MARHAM.

RAF 2020 photo competition. A F-35 Lightning Pilot from 207 Sqn - Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) at RAF Marham. OCU supports preparation for the operational missions of F-35 by providing trained personnel, teach pilots how to fly an aircraft and which tactics best exploit the performance of their aircraft and its weapons.

The F-35’s Helmet Mounted Display Systems provide pilots with unprecedented situational awareness. All the information pilots need to complete their missions – airspeed, heading, altitude, targeting information and warnings – is projected on the helmet’s visor, rather than on a traditional Heads-up Display. This approach greatly reduces the pilot’s workload and increases responsiveness. Additionally, the F-35’s Distributed Aperture System (DAS) streams real-time imagery from six infrared cameras mounted around the aircraft to the helmet, allowing pilots to “look through” the airframe. The helmet also provides pilots night vision through the use of an integrated camera.

The picture shows Predawn Thunderstorm over El Paso, Texas by Lori Grace Bailey, 48, from Arizona. It was taken in Texas. They said: "I live in Arizona but was visiting family members in El Paso, Texas that week. Very early on the morning of November 6th I woke up and felt an urge to check my radar app on my phone. I discovered a discrete thunderstorm cell was moving north from Mexico towards the U.S. border near downtown El Paso. I hurriedly gathered my camera gear and drove to an overlook that gave me a perfect vista of the storm and of the downtown El Paso skyline. It's always been a "dream shot" of mine to capture lightning over this desert city landscape."The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), which celebrates its 170th birthday this year, in association with AccuWeather, has put the shortlisted pictures on their website and people can visit photocrowd.com/wpotyvote to vote until September 25.The popular competition, which is now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from around the world.

The picture shows Sa Foradada Storm by Marc Marco Ripoll, 39, from Mallorca, Spain. The picture was taken at the Viewpoint Sa Foradada between the towns Valldemossa and Dei in Mallorca. He said: ÒI tried many times to catch a good lightning strike behind this rock called Sa Foradada, but every time I tried, the conditions were not so good. I didn't have the moon on the sky to illuminate the scene, or the lightning was too far away. This night I knew that a big storm was approaching Mallorca and all the conditions were perfect. I don't remember if the moon was full, but I remember that it was very big. This was perfect, because the moon was going to illuminate all the land and the sea and gives more colour to the scene. I chose my composition, and I shot many pictures until the storm fell on me. This is one of the pictures I took that night in Sa Foradada. To see the storm and the lightning that night was something amazing.ÓThe 26 finalists for this yearÕs Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. EXCLUSIVE ALLROUNDERPICTURED: Tornado warned supercell storm near Judith Gap in Montana, USA
British landscape photographer John Finney, 48, from High Peak in Derbyshire, has captured these stunning extreme weather pictures while on a 10-day storm chasing trip across America's mid-west. Although safety was paramount, John and his colleagues found themselves in some sticky situations while documenting the epic journey.
John says, "We were chasing from the 19th of June to the 30th of June. We started in Colorado and chased into Oklahoma, Texas, then north through Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and finally Montana, where we covered approximately 5000 miles.
"The most dangerous storm was on the 21st of June, which started near Highway 287 just south of Limon, Colorado. As we began to give chase, the storm gained more momentum and caused extensive damage across Kansas and Nebraska in the following hours.
"Moving at 60mph, the storm was difficult to keep ahead of. We tried to stay about 10 miles ahead of the storm to avoid the damaging hail. We could only stop for photographs for a few minutes before the storm would catch us up again.
"As the storm worsened we fled east to nearby Wallace before we got caught up with 85mph winds with large hail. We managed to escape the worst of it, but some of our fellow storm chasers were not so lucky and they lost all of their car windows to the hail and debris that the storm had picked up. Most of the towns in the area had lost power and sustained damage from hail and wind but were lucky the storm didn't drop a tornado."
As these amazing pictures show, John survived the storms and is home safe and sound and has collated his best images from the trip for us all to see.
