The world’s smallest micro-controller, effectively a computer on a chip, has been unveiled and it’s about the size of a black pepper flake.

Known as an MCU, they are used in things like medical wearables and consumer electronics such as earbuds, without compromising performance.

The new wafer-thin chip, called the MSPM0C1104 measures just 1.38mm2 and has been created by US electronics giant Texas Instruments.

It is 38% smaller than existing alternatives.

The firm said consumers are continuously demanding that everyday electronic items, such as electric toothbrushes and stylus pens, offer more features in a smaller footprint at a lower cost.

A spokesperson explained: “ To innovate within these shrinking products, engineers are increasingly seeking compact, integrated components that enable them to add functionality while preserving board space.”

The MCU features 16KB of memory; a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter with three channels; six general-purpose input/output pins; and compatibility with standard communication interfaces.

Integrating accurate, high-speed analog components into the world's smallest MCU gives engineers the flexibility to maintain the computing performance in systems without increasing board size.

Vice president Vinay Agarwal said the world's smallest MCU, provides unlimited possibilities for smarter, more connected experiences for everyone in day-to-day life

It is also cost effective starting at just $0.16 USD for orders of 1,000 units.

A spectacular image of a prototype aircraft breaking the sound barrier has been released by US space agency NASA.

The photo of a XB-1 aircraft , being developed by US company Boom Supersonic, was taken using a special technique to create something called a Schlieren image.

A Schlieren system uses the principle of refraction and some clever optics to allow the visualisation of differences in density of in this case the air.

A team on the ground from NASA were able to document the changing air density around the supersonic aircraft and making visible the resulting shockwave as it hit Mach 1, the speed of sound, / 1,235 km/h

The aircraft is the world's first independently developed supersonic jet.

A skincare company has hit back at censorship of an advertising campaign where models showed off pubic hair — by creating a type font made entirely of the stuff.

US based Kiehl’s says the Pubic Display Type helps continue its promotion of inclusivity and body positivity.

It has unveiled three visuals featuring bold headlines formed entirely from pubic hair.

They read :”Our photos of models with pubic hair were censored, so we removed the models”; "Pubic hair don't care” and "Apologies, we won't show pubic hair ever again.”

A spokesperson said: “This first-of-its-kind font, crafted entirely from actual human pubic hair, is a creative response to censorship and an unapologetic celebration of self-care for all skin, including intimate areas.”

It has been launched after Kiehl's expanded its skincare range to the intimate care category in 2024 to address “the unique needs of sensitive areas.”

As part of this launch, Kiehl's unveiled advertising showcasing models with visible pubic hair, which it said challenged “ conventional beauty standards. “

It sparked debate but some visuals were censored in select store windows.

An aerospace start-up  has unveiled plans for the company's first passenger aircraft.
Called Horizon, the aircraft  has  an innovative blended-wing-body design capable of transporting 200 passengers with cargo along intercontinental routes.
The advantage of the blended wing design is that it doesn't have a join between the wing and the fuselage, greatly reducing drag.
A blended wing aircraft can also be made with much more interior space for cargo, passengers, or fuel.
The California company behind it, Natilus, says the liner will carry up to 200 passengers from New York to London for example, with 50% lower emissions. It is claimed to have  40% greater volume in each aircraft compared to tube-and-wing configurations.
The plan is for Horizon to enable commercial airlines to deliver an improved flight experience with a customisable cabin and seating layouts.

OPS: Render of the 200-passenger Horizon. It is the latest addition to Natilus's family of blended wing body aircraft,
which delivers exceptional fuel efficiency and higher payloads.

A home delivery food service by autonomous robot is about to take off — by incorporating drones to expand its business radius by up to 10 km.

San Francisco based Serve Robotics is teaming up with on-demand drone delivery provider Wing Aviation.

The partnership plans to expand eco-friendly, autonomous food delivery.

In the coming months, select Wing deliveries will be picked up by a Serve delivery robot from a restaurant's curb-side and delivered to a Wing drone AutoLoader a few blocks away.

From there an aerial delivery will be made to customers as much as 10 km away.

Wing is part of internet search company Google's parent company, Alphabet.
And offers drone delivery with a fleet of lightweight, highly automated delivery drones.

They can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes and between healthcare providers in minutes.

The two companies say the robot-to-drone delivery will enable merchants to tap into drone delivery without any changes to their facilities or workflow and significantly extend the delivery area for Serve’s sidewalk delivery robots.

A huge diamond has been unearthed in Africa tipping the scales at l 2,492 carats /498.4 grams.

The find is said to be one of the largest rough diamonds ever found.

The biggest gem-quality rough stone ever found was the Cullinan diamond dug up at Premier Mine in Cullinan, Transvaal, South Africa in 1905.

    It weighed 3,106 carats / 621 grams.

When cut, it yielded 105 stones, including the Great Star of Africa and others that are part of the British Crown Jewels.

The new stone was detected at the Karowe Diamond Mine in Botswana run by Canada-based Lucara Diamond Corp using x-ray based technology.

The system used is called Mega Diamond Recovery or MDR for short.

It was installed in 2017 to identify and preserve large, high-value diamonds.

Savoury Doritos snacks are boldly going where no Dorito has gone before — into space.

Special packs of the tortilla chips will be aboard a forthcoming space mission by Elon Musk’s Space X programme.

The mission, called Polaris Dawn, will feature the first space walk by private citizens.

But the four astronauts aboard will get to enjoy Doritos as part of a $500,000 USD sponsorship deal between Doritos maker PepsiCo and SpaceX to benefit charity.

An innovative oil-based coating was developed to keep the chips from crumbling causing a zero gravity mess.

The coating is also said to help keep the zesty Cool Ranch flavour in space.
Finally the chips come in mini versions to be eaten in one bite, again to save potential crumbs from floating around the Space X module.

Called Cool Ranch Zero Gravity chips, they are  packaged in space-approved tins for flight with the canister, enhanced with glow-in-the-dark features to commemorate the mission.

Doritos is making a $500,000 USD donation to the USA’s St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The charity is leading the way in treating and finding cures for  childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
