An off-coast floating hotel has been designed using sacks of discarded plastic filtered from the oceans.The plan is for the mesh bags of reclaimed items ranging from bottles to tyres to be woven weaved together to create a floating landfill. It will be anchored to the ocean floor whilst sand and silt are deposited on top.The idea is to make the area hospitable to nurture mangrove trees whose roots grow around bags, cementing them to create a stable structure. Mangroves have been used as methods of flood defence by capturing or trapping sediment to self-build a type of defence wall as well as acting as flood prevention.This is thanks to their roots that swell and absorb the water preventing the island from capsizing or sinking and protect it from storms.The island structureb itself would also have a hand in filtering lastics from the water.The design is by London-based architect Margot Krasojevic whose brief is for am environmentally friendly resort in the Indian Ocean off the Australian-territory of the Cocos Islands.
