Wrought iron Volkswagen Beetle, Croatia - Jul 2012

Pray It Doesn't Rain: Wrought Iron Volkswagen Beetle
It has natural air-conditioning but is perhaps not great for rainy weather, this wrought-iron VW Beetle is a unique ride.
A company is more used to making gates and fencing but decided to make an eye-catching promotion for their work.
Working in secret from the rest of Croatian company MG Vrbanus's staff, three craftsmen painstakingly handmade the body ready to be mounted onto a VW Beetle frame.
The project took four months and 3000 man hours to complete with details including exterior 24-carat gold leaf and hand-stitched leather interior.
Fashioned from a white 1970 Type 1, the car was completely stripped down to the bare mechanics before the ornate body was applied.
Sandro Vrbanus explains: "The idea of using a Volkswagen Beetle came about because it was in production for so long it really became an iconic car. Everyone knows the Beetle and can readily identify with it. Besides which, it would be not too difficult to remove the sheet metal bodywork and replace it with wrought iron sections."
The design was first pencil sketched before the panel was unbolted and used as a template upon which the various crafted pieces were placed and checked for correct curvature and length before being welded together.
Each component was bespoke, and although the workforce in the main factory was curious as to exactly what was going on, no-one was given a sneak preview until the project was completed.
The finished work was so precise that the window glass could be refitted into the original rubber mouldings. The wrought iron bodywork added an additional 70kg the original weight of 820kg.
Sandro says: "It was in pretty rough condition, but all we wanted to use for the project was the rolling chassis and floor pan, plus, of course, the drivetrain. The odome...

Wily Coyote Struck by Car Found Alive And Embedded In Vehicle - 8 Hours Later
WILY COYOTE STRUCK BY CAR FOUND ALIVE AND EMBEDDED IN VEHICLE - 8 HOURS LATER
When a brother and sister struck a coyote at 75mph they assumed they had killed the animal and drove on.
But EIGHT hours later they found the wild animal embedded in their front fender - and very much ALIVE.
Not only that, the wild animal escaped from where it was being kept to recover.
Daniel and Tevyn East were driving at night along Interstate 80 near the Nevada-Utah border when they noticed a pack of coyotes near the roadside.
When one of the animals ran in front of the car, the impact sounded fatal so the siblings thought there no point in stopping.
"Right off the bat, we knew it was bad," Daniel explained. "We thought the story was over."
After the incident around 1am, they continued their 600 mile drive to North San Juan - even stopping for fuel at least twice. They had started in Boulder, Colorada and were driving to start a new life at an artists community.
But it was only when they finally reached their destination at 9am did they take time to examine what damage may have sustained.
"Immediately I saw a ton of fur and said 'Sis, don't look, this is bad.'" says David.
They were amazed to find the coyote embedded between the front fender and radiator of their Honda Fit car.
Tevyn says: "The animal flinches and my brother, who is usually as cool as a cucumber, starts jumping around. He had such a tiny space to move around in.
They called Penn Valley-based Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release, who arrived to help free the coyote by removing the whole bumper of the car.
Tevyn says: "I don't like hitting animals, but when we saw the b...

A Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) uses slides to show the local people that the Dutch troops have come with good intentions. The Uruzgan Task Force was launched on 1 August 2006 with the aim of maintaining security and starting reconstruction work in the area, together with the local population. The PRT is a special military unit that helps with the reconstruction of the country.

OUT OF THE DUST - LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN
A powerful collection of images of everyday life in Afghanistan will be displayed for the first time in the UK in a new exhibition this summer.
'Out of the Dust - Life in Afghanistan' features images by Dutch photographer Hans Stakelbeek. The exhibition runs from 30 July-31 August 2008 at PM Gallery in west London.
In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.
Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.
As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.
'Out of the Dust' presents a set of images that pays tribute to the determination of the Afghan people to survive and live as normally as possible through the upheaval - building homes, going to school and working and playing in testing and frightening times.
The collection gives a rare view of daily life in Afg...

U.S. Navy 'swim calls' - 2016
When you're job is sailing the seas, the World is your swimming pool.
These amazing pictures show sailors and marines from the U.S. Navy taking part in what they call 'swim calls'.
Most recently pictured earlier this month (Feb) are those cooling off by jumping from into the Indian Ocean from guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam.
With the ship anchored, Swim Calls are seen as a refreshing break from the job of keeping high-tech battleships running.
The activity often occurs in warm foreign waters, such as the Mediterranean, Arabian and South China seas, the Indian and Pacific oceans.
Suffice to say, there will be people tasked with shark watch, from the ship and rigid-hulled inflatable boats.
Swimmers are able to clamber back onto the ship via landing docks or by climbing cargo nets.
