Trailblazing St Charles County K-9 officer retires
Retiring St. Charles County K-9 officer Bonnie gives Madonna Zoellner a friendly lick of appreciation on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, after Zoellner gifted the K-9 officer with a gift bag full of treats in honor of retirement. Bonnie, a trailblazing electronics-sniffing K-9 officer whose powerful sense of smell helped crack sex crimes, human trafficking and homicide cases, retired from the St. Charles County Police Department on Friday. Her human colleagues celebrated Bonnie, who spent 8 years on the police force, at special retirement ceremony with gourmet dog biscuits, stuffed animals, commemorative baseball cards, flowers and plenty of behind-the-ear scratches and belly rubs for the honored Labrador retriever. “She absolutely was a groundbreaking K-9 officer. She was the first K-9 officer in Missouri to work in electronic storage detection, and only the 13th or 14th K-9 officer in the nation to do that kind of work,” said Cpl. Barry Bayles, a spokesperson for the St. Charles County Police Department.(POST DISPATCH/POLARIS) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) -

"Emily" K-9 mannequin prepares students to properly position dogs for surgery
Rescue Critters
RESCUE CRITTERS
At first these look like shocking pictures of creatures in distress - but these images actually show important training using FAKE animals.
Called Rescue Critters, these detailed mannequins are a vital tool in teaching trainee vets how to treat animals.
Emergency services can also use larger imitation creatures such as horses to practice rescue drills.
Different life-like animals can be made to teach specific medical procedures.
Critical Care Jerry is dog mannequin used to simulate a canine in trauma - whether that be from a missing limb or a lung op.
The GBP 1000 poorly pup features a realistic airway, representations of trachea, oesophagus, and epiglottis, working lungs, artificial pulse and is designed to perform endotracheal placement, compressions, mouth-to-snout resuscitation, splinting and bandaging.
There are also newborn puppies and kittens for whelping practice (GBP 300), a GBP 2000 female dog called Emily to help properly position dogs for surgery, and even a GBP 350 rat called Squeekums that teaches lab technicians how to handle rodents with confidence.
Search and rescue can also be practiced using Lucky, a GBP 7000 horse mannequin designed to be able to simulate rescues from places like ravines.
Craig Jones, president of the California-based company, says: "I noticed that there was not only a lack of mannequins for pet first aid, but also an absence of training devices and manikins for veterinary education."
