TEACHING THEM THE ROPES
21 February 1950
How to enjoy the thrills of skiing at a place where winter never comes is shown at Cypress Gardens, Florida, where water skiing is an all the year round sport.
Nerve and skill are required of the aquatic rider, who has to hold on to wooden hand grips and keep his balance on slender slivers of wood as he skims the waves behind a fast travelling motor boat.
Helping young recruits to the sport at Cypress Gardens is a 18 year old Dick Pope, water ski champion for 1948 and 1949, who takes time off from college strudies to act as instructor.
At places with a less equable climate, water skiing is a summer pastime but it is rapidly gaining popularity and has captivated thousands of Americans from six to sixty.
Picture Shows: Young water skiers riding the waves at speed, listen to instructions from Dick Pope (equipped with megaphone) on how to maintain the proper position and keep their balance.
If they can pass this test the pupils are allowed to ski solo. (FOTO:DUKAS/TOPFOTO)
