South African coal belt town split over green transition.
South African coal belt town split over green transition.
The country wants to cut greenhouse gas emissions without destroying livelihoods, but progress is slow - and the residents of a small town are in the crosshairs.
Eskom is transforming the Komati power station into a renewable energy hub that includes a training facility and an agrivoltaic farm. This initiative will use the land for both solar power generation and agriculture, effectively creating a "farm" integrated with solar panels. Additionally, Eskom is establishing a training facility aimed at reskilling and upskilling employees and community members like Tshepang Matela- a data analyst intern, for careers in the renewable energy sector.
In October 2022, the Komati Power Station was decommissioned, marking the end of its operational life. This closure has left the surrounding community in a difficult situation, as many residents relied on employment at the plant. The former Komati coal power station has now been converted into a solar and wind power facility, aimed at being a flagship project for South Africa's “just transition” away from coal. However, it has failed to deliver the anticipated job opportunities in an already high-unemployment area. This disappointing outcome is being leveraged to justify the continued operation of South Africa's aging and polluting coal power stations. Furthermore, the country's persistent daily power cuts, which mostly ceased early last year, are now being used to push back the closure dates of three coal power stations from 2027 to 2030. This situation highlights the urgent need for a more effective transition strategy.

23 May 2025. A student from an informal settlement called The Big House, located behind the Komati Power Station in Mpumalanga, walks past a stream on his way to school during mid-winter in South Africa. The stream runs right next to the settlement. During the rainy season, it floods, making it difficult for children to attend school.
