  • Exchanging the capital for a breath of fresh air doesn't have to be dull. The ex-Londoners who have cracked the countryside code.

Exchanging the capital for a breath of fresh air doesn't have to be dull. The ex-Londoners who have cracked the countryside code.
    Cranbrook, Kent
This achingly pretty market town, dotted with clapboard houses and windmills, is set in the heart of the Kentish Weald so it certainly has the quintessential looks exiting Londoners yearn for.
The presence of the Ofsted outstanding Cranbrook School, one of the UK's top performing state schools, means ambitious parents fight to move within its catchment area. And, of course, there are Kent's grammar schools all around.
Its also super for foodies. The Hartley Coffee House and Farm Shop is packed with delectables and there is also a traditional butcher, a micropub, Larkins Alehouse, and independent cafes.
For culture, Grierson Galleries puts on regular shows and The Queen's Hall Theatre adds film screenings and com- edy nights to the mix. Gatwick Airport is close by, as is Ashford for quick trips across to Paris on the Eurostar.

Picture shows Cranbrook Union Windmill, A Grade II Listed smock mill just off The Hill. It is the tallest smock mill in the country & has been fully restored & is in full working order producing small amounts of flour that is sold locally. The sails were removed a number of months ago to be refurbished. They are set to be reinstalled next month.

Why I live in Stoke Newington: art consultant Georgia Spray on her creative, family-friendly London neighbourhood
Georgia Spray runs online art platform Partnership Editions. Here's why she loves her east London areaÕs creative local community.

I've lived in Stoke Newington for five years. I moved to a house just off Newington Green about a year ago with my husband and one-year-old daughter.

It's such a creative community, there are so many artists I work with who have studios in this area. Partnership Editions studio is a five-minute cycle from my house, part of a complex of independent businesses, so it's got a real independent, creative hub feel.
