KAZAKHSTAN / Zhangiz-Tobe / 2008. Abandoned Soviet military base after the collapse of the USSR. Inside the Palace of Culture on the military base. The painting is a reproduction of the original by P. Krivonogov "Capitulation", 1946. Zhangiz-Tobe housed R-36 / SS-18 'Satan' intercontinental ballistic missiles, one of the most powerful of Soviet weapons. The end of World War II saw the USSR emerge as one of the world's two superpowers. Celebration of victory over Nazi Germany replaced the cult of Revolution and gave a legitimacy to the regime. The painful realities of the war often found expression in allegorical semi-religious images of mothers holding dead children in their arms. Honouring the immense sacrifices of the war was at least one thing which the government and the people could agree about.

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.

They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.

Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.

The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".

New Software Can Remove People From Google Street View
A student has developed software that can REMOVE people from Google's controversial Street View.

Concerns about privacy have been raised since the online service was launched, with people unaware they have been snapped by Google's roaming camera cars.

But computer science graduate student Arturo Flores from the University of California, San Diego, has worked on a system that removes pedestrians and replaces the holes in the images with an approximation of the actual background behind each person.

These corresponding background pixels are pulled from the image taken right before or right after the image in question.

But the software is far from perfect at this stage of development - with bizarre sights left for the viewer.

The proof-of-concept system launched at this summer's IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Vision saw handheld items such as umbrellas left floating in the air, while a man walking his dog is removed leaving the dog looking like a stray.

Flores says his work would help protect privacy as, despite the fact that faces are blurred on Street View, people can still be identified by their clothing and location.

He explains: "Some European countries have claimed Google is in breach of one or more EU privacy laws. As a result, Google has introduced a sliding window based system that automatically blurs faces and license plates in street view images with a high recall rate.

"While this goes a long way in addressing the privacy concerns, many personally identifable features still remain on the un-blurred person. Articles of clothing, body shape, height, etc may be considered personally identifable. Combined with the geo-positioned i...

Combined with the geo-positi...

SAINT TROPEZ BATTLES TO BRING BACK THE GLAMOUR

St Tropez's mayor has gone on a glamour offensive over fears that the exclusive resort is being turned into the 'French Ibiza'.

Traditionally the tiny port has been the haunt of the rich, famous and sophisticated.

However, a new breed of tourist has led to an upsurge in tacky souvenirs and vulgar displays.

Up to 100,000 day trippers regularly pack into the small seafront town.

And while super yachts can still be found in its old port and sports cars drive along its roads, there has been another, less welcome, intrusion.

Now tourists come to gawp at the riches around them and snap up t-shirts, shot glasses and even condoms that bear the message 'I Love Saint-Tropez'.

The Disused Elevated Rail Track Set To Become New York's Prettiest Park
THE DISUSED ELEVATED RAIL TRACK SET TO BECOME NEW YORK'S PRETTIEST PARK

A disused railway track looks set to become one of the prettiest parks in New York.

The High Line in west Chelsea is being converted into a park including floating ponds, sundecks and lookout spots over the Hudson River and Manhattan.

The elevated former industrial line had become decrepit and overgrown but thanks to the support of wealthy benefactors and several famous names it is undergoing a transformation into an amazing green space.

With the first phase set to open to the public later this month (June), the park should span 22 blocks once it's all open in 2010.

Stretching 1.45 miles, up to 30ft high and only 60ft wide, the line runs along Manhattan's West Side, from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea to 34th Street.

Having last carried freight in 1980, it was saved from demolition by former mayor Michael Bloomberg and has seen high-profile support from the likes of Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Weinstein and Jerry Seinfeld.

With $50m needed to complete the project, a recent star-studded fundraising gala saw individuals donations of $10m each from media mogul Barry Diller, whose corporate headquarters overlooks the elevated tracks, and billionaire hedge-fund manager Philip Falcone and his wife Lisa Maria, bringing the total current project pot to $44m.
