A Pokemon trading card featuring yellow lightning hero Pikachu has sold for a staggering $300,000 USD / €271.630 euros at auction.
It only was available to dedicated players of the pocket monster game , known as trainers, who finished in the top four at the first official Pokemon tournament in Chiba, Japan, in 1997.
The car which sold was originally presented to the trainer who finished third in the tournament and was described as the highest rated because of its near mint status.
The card , rated eight out of ten for condition, shows a smiling Pikachu hugging a trophy under a heading saying “Trainer No 3”.
None of the three remaining cards handed out to the players are graded higher.
The card drew more than 50 bids before closing at $300,000 at the Trading Card Games SignatureAuction stage by US sale room heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas..
At the same auction, an uncut 110 card test print run for a 1999 Pokémon base set for the Wizards of the Coast game sold for $250,000 USD / €226.360 euros.
That was more than eight times its pre-auction estimate.
