    Red Kite flying
    Red kites, Wales - 05 Mar 2013
Wheeling through the air with the greatest of ease, these red kites are the acrobats of the air. The agile birds and their impressive aerial displays were snapped by photographer Drew Buckley in Wales. In one shot a particularly athletic bird is seen with its wings practically vertical as it swiftly turns in the air. Another is seen with its feet tucked and wings outstretched as it dives straight down. Drew comments: "My main aim on this outing was to capture something different from the norm. Red Kites are renowned for their acrobatic skills, so I wanted to catch them switching into a dive swooping for carrion". Once upon a time red kites and their lofty flying feats were a rare sight after the species came close to extinction. However, it was saved by one of the world's longest running protection programmes and the birds have since been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland.

Feathered Fast Food: Amazing Aerial Food Exchange
With pin-sharp precision, razor-sharp talons rip into the tasty critter. These stunning shots show the aerial exchange of food between white-tailed kites.

The male will hunt for rodents, usually mice or voles, and the female will fly up to snatch the prize from his claws.

Photographer Steve Shinn captured the amazing spectacle of two separate fast food handovers by the same couple in rural Orange County, California.

Steve explains: "White-tailed kites were endangered for a while but have now begun to recover. Still, they are not all that common and are difficult to approach and photograph.

"The pictures show the courting, aerial exchange of food. The male goes hunting and returns with loud chirps to alert the waiting female. She flies up to meet him and takes the prize from his talons.

"She then goes to a nearby branch to rip into it. Occasionally the male will return to eat one himself, but sometimes the female will fly over and take it from him by force and eat it while sitting next to him. Talk about pushy, eh?"
