AMMUNITION BARGES SINK, JETTY WRECKED, AS DOUBLE EXPLOSION SHAKES NAVAL TOWN.
With sides caved in and roof collapsed, this building was one of those damaged when there was a double explosion at the Royal Naval Ammunition depot at Bedenham here, where 1400 tons of shells and bombs exploded. The explosion occurred on some naval ammunition barges, eight of which were lost, and on the 200 feet long loading jetty. Frantic efforts were made to drag trucks to safety from the jetty. Most of them were saved, but others exploded, blasting the end of the jetty, hurling trucks into the water, and leaving twisted rails hanging over the end.

PORTSMOUTH EXPLOSION WRECKS AMMUNITION JETTY - TRAIN THROWN INTO WATER.
An air picture of the end of the pier which was severely damaged by the explosion of 1400 tons of shells and bombs at the Royal Naval Ammunition depot at Bedenham here. Twisted rails may be seen jutting out over the end of the jetty. An ammunition train fell into the water.
The explosions occured in some naval ammunition barges, eight of which were lost. The second explosion was on the ammunition train on the jetty. The majority of the trucks were hauled to safety, but those which exploded destroyed the whole of the end of the jetty.
