NEWS - Mossul: IS sprengt Al-Nuri-Moschee in die Luft
May 24, 2017 - Mosul, Iraq: Destruction of Mosul buildings during the offensive by Iraqi forces against ISIS terror group. On June 21, the Islamic State group destroyed Mosul's al-Nuri mosque and its iconic leaning minaret known as al-Hadba when fighters detonated explosives inside the structures. The mosque — also known as Mosul's Great Mosque — is where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a so-called Islamic caliphate in 2014 shortly after the city was overrun by the militants and was seen as a key symbolic prize in the fight for Iraq's second largest city. The minaret that leaned like Italy's Tower of Pisa stood for more than 840 years. (Asmaa Waguih/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) *** Local Caption *** 05892610

Aleppo before the battle
July 15, 2012 , Aleppo, Syria: General view of Al Azizyeh, a residential and commercial neighborhood in the center of town. With a civil war raging for months in many parts of Syria, Aleppo, the country's largest city, remained fairly quiet but tense. Recently explosion shattered the calm and in the last week of July the Syrian army started bombing some neighborhoods to destroy all elements of the rebellion led by the Free Syrian Army. By July 31 over 200 thousand residents fled the city that became stage of an all out war. (Carole Alfarah/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

Life in Iran

Life In Iran
Think of Iran and certain words may spring to mind: 'secretive', 'oppressive', 'evil'.
However, beyond the headlines and the politics, dig a little deeper and a very different Iran emerges.
It is a country where a large proportion of the population is under 35, partly thanks to a call by Ayatollah Khomeini to create 'armies for Islam'.
Ironically, the country's youth is now considered to be one of the biggest dangers, with many deeply unhappy with the current regime.
And, rather than despise America and the West, this group of post-revolution young adults do not prescribe to the anti-American propaganda that is often spouted.
As its President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad can often be seen as the 'face' of Iran and his hardline views considered to be the feelings of the majority.
Meanwhile, George W Bush's 2002 comments that Iran was part of an "axis of evil" has further coloured outside views of the country.
In reality Iran is a lot friendlier - and a lot more complicated - a country than you might first have thought.
