US space agency NASA  is looking at growing homes for astronauts on the Moon and Mars — using fungi.

The  concept has been selected for research into providing accommodation for future explorers.

Some habitats, such as landers and rovers, will be delivered to planetary surfaces.

However, the fungi project team is developing technologies that could “grow” habitats on the Moon, Mars, and beyond using fungi and the underground threads that comprise the main part of fungi, known as mycelia.

With this development, explorers could travel with a compact habitat built out of lightweight material containing dormant fungi.

By adding water, fungi can potentially grow around that framework into a fully functional human habitat, while being safely contained to avoid contaminating the environment.

A team of researchers at the NASA Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley will receive new $2 million USD funding for the habitat research.

OPS: Bricks produced using mycelium, yard waste and wood chips as a part of the myco-architecture project. Similar materials could be used to build habitats on the Moon or Mars.

Re-processed urine, sweat and humidity is set to provide astronauts for future long haul space missions with up to 98 percent of the water required.

US Space Agency NASA has developed a life support system that can regenerate or recycle consumables and is testing them on the International Space Station.

Each astronaut on the space station required about a gallon of water daily.

But water is heavy making it expensive to transport and requiring lots of valuable space to store it.

NASA support systems need to recover close to 98% of the water that crews bring along at the start of a long journey.

The space station’s Environmental Control and Life Support System, known as ECLSS has now demonstrated that it can achieve that.

Astronauts on long haul space missions will be able to cook and enjoy their own French fries according to new research.

An experiment has shown that tasty fried potato dish can be made in weightless conditions.

It involved the European Space Agency sending a sealed deep-fat fryer monitored by researchers at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece on a parabolic flight above Earth.

This is where an aircraft flies in repeated arcs to recreate brief moments of weightlessness without going into space.

The agency has been supporting research in frying cooking methods in microgravity to fill in knowledge gaps on Earth and in space.

Even though frying potatoes is done everywhere around the world, it involves complex physics and chemistry, and in space everything becomes more complicated.

The researchers admitted before the flights they were not sure frying would work in weightlessness.

The lunar rover that will transport astronauts across the terrain and have the ability to autonomously map the Moon surface has been announced. The vehicle is being readied for US space agency NASA’s mission to put human’s back on the Moon later this decade for its Artemis programme. The new rover is called an LTV – short for Lunar Terrain Vehicle. It will even come with its own specially Moon lander to the machines can be delivered remotely to the planned bases NASA intends to deploy in the long term. They will be able to travel further than the basic rovers used on three of the Seventies Apollo missions,They can also be worked remotely to explore doe signs of ice that could provide lunar bases with water. They will also be able to 3D maps and be equipped with high resolution cameras. The project is being pulled together by US space, aeronautics , defence and cyberspace company Northrop Grumman. It has entered into an agreement with three other companies to design and build the LTV.

Virgin empire businessman Sir Richard Branson has unveiled the space suits which passengers on his tourist flights to outer space will wear. They have been created for his Virgin Galactic company by US fitness wear company Under Armour. The spacewear system for Virgin Galactic astronauts is made up of a base layer, spacesuit, footwear, training suit and Limited Edition astronaut jacket. It is the first such collection ever created specifically for private astronauts. The design of astronaut apparel is a unique combination of the requirement for comfort and utility. The suits are the result of the collaboration announced in January this year by Branson and Under Armour founder Kevin Plank. The spacesuit is made from lightweight flight-grade fabrics, with cushioning in elbows, knees and in the footwear, to provide safety in out-of-seat zero gravity. The suits are complemented by training suits which will help to optimize the effectiveness of astronaut preparation in the days immediately before spaceflight.
