40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering
February 1, 2025 - Elko, Nevada, United States: Cleo Hansen and DW Groethe toast in the Western Folklife Center's office. DW has used Rodney Nelson's mug at the Gathering ever since his good friend passed away. The mug lives atop the bar at the Pioneer Saloon Scenes from the 40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering (formerly: Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering), is an annual gathering celebrating cowboy poetry produced by the Western Folklife Center, that takes place in Elko, Nevada. Organized by a team of folklorists and local cowboy poets including Hal Cannon and Waddie Mitchell, the Gathering started in 1985 as a place where Western ranchers and cowboys could gather to share poems about their lives working cattle. From the beginning, it was clear these men and women had found their tribe, an artistic community that few knew existed. Three decades later, the tribe is now a nation of Western poets, musicians, artisans and storytellers, telling stories of hard work, heartbreak, hilarity, and what it means to make your way in the rangeland West. The "Elko Gathering" was renamed the "National Cowboy Poetry Gathering" thanks to an act of Congress in 1980. (Jessica Brandi Lifland / Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

    IN PHOTO: Lee Cartledge

A North Yorkshire potter has created a limited edition mug with Brexit carved in it so it leaks liquid, rendering the vessel totally useless and therefore "sums up Brexit".

Lee Cartledge of Bentham Pottery posted a picture of the witty mug on Facebook causing it to go viral.

Although the mug can't be used, Cartledge thinks that the idea has chimed with the British public because of its connection to a cup of tea.

"You always associate cups of tea with the British public and it was quite an inoffensive way to explain how I felt about the whole Brexit scenario," Lee Cartledge, 52, said.

"I think it sums up the whole Brexit negotiations, whether you're a Remainer or a Brexiteer," said Cartledge.

"It's quite an inoffensive Brexit statement."

The self-sabotaging mug was created on a total whim by the potter, and has received an unprecedented response.

The original post has since been shared over 17,000 times, and the potter has been overwhelmed with requests from people who want to get their hands on one.

"What started off as a casual Facebook post seems to have tapped into the national psyche," Lee wrote.

"Quite frankly I am amazed at the response, I have been inundated with messages and emails requesting Brexit mugs."

Lee plans to make a limited edition of 60 mugs to sell commercially. "I don't particularly want to spend the next few months making a load of Brexit mugs.'

"I can just about stomach 60." he said.
