A robot dog that can use its two front legs to pick up and handle objects while walking on its hind ones has been developed by researchers.

The bot, called LocoMan, was created to enhance the uses for quadruped machines to more than just factory or plant video inspections.

It uses lightweight loco-manipulators to expand its abilities allowing it to perform fairly complex manipulation tasks.

These include opening drawers and cupboards to place or retrieve items, pouring drinks and even hoisting a basket.

Four legged robots are also known for their ability to walk over challenging terrain at speed thanks to their low centres of gravity.

LocoMan , developed at the USA’s Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh,  is unique because it can transition from its all-fours stance to a standing pose and use its two front legs to manipulate objects.

A stair-climbing wheelchair which also stands up the user for face-to-face conversations, said to be a world first, has been developed by engineers.

The design also places a strong emphasis on user comfort and adaptability.

The electric powered wheelchair , developed by the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials , has a central platform equipped with a stair-climbing module located at the bottom and a standing module on top.

When the user encounters a flight of stairs, the stair-climbing module is lowered while maintaining the wheelchair’s horizontal level.

It utilises fa pair of rubber caterpillar tracks that give a anon-slip grip the edge of the stairs supported by the chair’s wheels.

It allows the user to tackle the staircase one step at a time without compromising safety.

It works the same way when descending a staircase.

The stair-climbing module is designed to stay retracted within the chair when not needed.

The standing module transitions between various postures, including standing, reclining, leaning backwards or leaning forward.

A photographer has captured images of two adorable bear cubs playing in the wild.

Wildlife photographer Christine Haines spent six days at the Silver Salmon Creek Lodge, Alaska, photographing Coastal Brown Bears.

In the pictures the bear cubs can be seen eating sedge grass and play-fighting, alongside being nursed by their mother.

Pictures show one of the cubs poking its tongue out, almost as if directed to the camera.

Meanwhile, another photo shows one of the cubs with its head in its hand, perhaps due to an exhausting day playing with its sibling.

The cubs' mother can be seen keeping a watchful eye over the little ones, and in one picture the mother and cubs can be seen standing upright in the same pose.

GERMANY / Jüterborg / 2008. Abandoned Soviet military base after the collapse of the USSR. The oath of allegiance of the Soviet soldier. By taking the oath of allegiance a soldier was swearing 'to be an upright, brave, disciplined, vigilant soldier? to strictly preserve military and government secrets, and to execute, without contradiction, all military regulations and orders of commanders and superiors.' Some 40,000 to 70,000 Soviet military personnel were stationed with their families in and around Jüterborg.

    FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/p8ug

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.

They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.

Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.

The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".

What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.
