Coptic Christians of Cairo's 'Garbage City'
23rd February 2012 - Cairo, Egypt: Tourists outside the St. Simon The Tanner church, the largest in the Middle East, which is carved into the Mokattam Hills above the Manshiyat Nasser settlement. Manshiyat Nasser is a settlement on the outskirts of Cairo, regarded by many to be a slum and often referred to as 'Garbage City'. The vast majority of the area's population is Coptic Christian, local people claiming that only 1 in 10 people in settlement are Muslim. Despite being regarded as a slum the area has a steady economy that revolves around the collection and recycling of Cairo's waste. Notably the community, commonly known as the Zabaleen, claim to recycle around 80% of the waste they collect, compared to the 25% that private waste management companies manage.
