WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST - THE QUEEN MARY CONVERTED INTO A COMFORT SHIP FOR G.I. BRIDES AND BABIES.
Work goes on apace on the Queen Mary, as she lies in dry dock at Southampton, converting her from a trooper into a luxury ship to take G.I. brides and their babies to America. As a troopship she used to carry as many as 15,000 men aboard. As a "brides and babies" ship, she will carry 2500 passengers. Nurses and stewardesses will be added to her crew, and special nursery arrangements are being contrived aboard, to endsure that the English wives of American troops make a comfortable voyage with their families to the country of their adoption.

In dry-dock at Southampton for her Festival year overhaul , the world's largest liner ' Queen Elizabeth ' has a strange resemblance to the ' Vertical feature ' that will tower over the Exhibiition grounds on London's South Bank. The Cunarder, bulking her 83,000 tons in King George V dry-dock , is having a five weeks overhaul in preparation for a busy festival of Britain season. Nearly 2,000 workmen are busy on her , cleaning and examining machinery, superstructre and interior. Four thousand gallons of paint will be used on the hull and interior of the ship. The liner will make her next sailing to New York on 8 February

CHINA-JIANGSU-HUAXI VILLAGE-TERTIARY INDUSTRY (CN)

It used to be only a dream for farmers in some parts of China of living as good a life as, or even a better life than urbanites did. But the dream comes true in Huaxi Village.
In 1965, the former Village Communist Party Committee Secretary Wu Renbao mobilized his fellow villagers to bring a new look to Huaxi and worked with them to get out of poverty. He led the village in diversifying production into sideline and industrial sectors, which made Huaxi one of the wealthiest villages in China after nearly 40 years of suffering, struggle and persisting.
Since 2004, Huaxi has started transform of its economic growth. While maintaining the development of traditional industries, the village strived to develop the tertiary industry, covering the areas of tourism, logistics, finance service, import and export trade, ocean shipping, ocean engineering and aviation. In 2010, the tertiary industry contributed 40 percent to the profits of the village. (Xinhua/Sun Can) (llp)

CHINA-1911 REVOLUTION-INDUSTRY-DEVELOPMENT (CN)
(110930) -- BEIJING, Sept. 30, 2011 (Xinhua) -- The file photo taken on March 16, 2008 shows a container ship in its trial voyage in Baoshan port of Shanghai, east China. The container ship, which was produced by the Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd, could load 10,000 standard containers.
Can you imagine what the industry of China, now enjoys the title of "World Factory", was like a century ago?
In 1905, when the imperial Qing government sent five senior officials to Japan and some Western countries to visit, seeking for solutions to save the decaying empire, "Yanchang Oil Plant", the first-ever oil enterprise in the Chinese mainland, was established in Yan'an of northwest China's Shaanxi Province. In 1907, Yanchang drilled the first onshore oil well "Yanyi Well", starting the oil production in the Chinese mainland. However, in 1907, the oil output could only reach 1 to 1.5 tonnes per day.
More than 100 years passed, Yanchang, now called Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Co., LTD, has made great development.
In 2007, the crude oil output, oil refining and processing, and sales of oil products of Yanchang respectively exceeded 10 million tonnes, engendering it into an emerging large oilfield with the output of 10 million tonnes.
Yanchang is an epitome of Chinese industry's centennial development since the 1911 Revolution.
The 1911 Revolution, led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, overthrew the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and also put an end to thousands of years of feudalist governance in China. After the revolution, Chinese industry developed as many Chinese factories, in the fields such as textile, flour, match, and steel and iron, were established at that time. However, most Chinese factories were in small scale and did not thrive for a long time.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, step by step, Chinese industry has formed an independent and integral modern industry system with considerable scale and relatively h

You Floated My Battleship! The Superships That Carry Superloads
When the weighty problem of transporting superloads around the world arises, a bulky breed of superships are ready to take up the challenge.
But rather than standard cargo containers, these vessels are capable of floating unimaginable loads including full oil rigs, multiple nuclear-powered submarines and, in one epic voyage, 18 barges from China to the Netherlands.
Currently, the Australian Navy are employing the services of Netherlands-based shipping company Dockwise's MV Blue Marlin, the largest cargo transport ship in the world.
The ship is transporting the first of two aircraft carrier hulls from Spain to Melbourne.
The Australian Landing Helicopter Dock (ALHD) Canberra is the first to commence the 12,000 nautical mile voyage around the Cape of Good Hope, estimated to be completed in 45 days after setting off on 20 August from Punta Langosteira, a new large port just south of La Coruna, northern Spain.
Spanish company Navantia has completed construction of the ships from the keel to the flight deck, and now the hulls are being transported for completion by BAE Systems Australia. The second hull, the ALHD Adelaide, will be transported in early 2014.
Blue Marlin is more than up to the task, being 712ft in length, larger than two football pitches, 138ft deep and able to carry 75,000 tonnes. That said, the ALHD Canberra is so large it overhangs the Blue Marlin deck by 180ft.
Blue Marlin's load capability also meant it was the ship of choice for the U.S. Navy when they had to transport the stricken destroyer USS Cole back to the United States after the warship was damaged by an Al-Qaeda suicide bomber attack while anchored in the port of Aden, Yemen.
The Blue Marlin is manned by a 24 crew and is powered by 17,000 horsep...

Captain stands on bow of Queen Mary 2 cruise ship, Bali, Indonesia - 02 Mar 2014
Captain Kevin Oprey is seen standing beneath the soaring hull of Cunard's flagship Queen Mary 2, the largest and most expensive Ocean Liner ever built, a mile off the coast of Bali during the ship's Round World Voyage in its 10th anniversary year. Captain Oprey surveys the scene from the top of the vessel's bulbous bow, an underwater projection that minimises the creation of bow waves around the waterline when the ship is under way. At 151,200 tons, Queen Mary 2 accommodates 2,620 passengers and 1,253 crew. In her first 10 years of operation, following a spectacular naming by Her Majesty The Queen on 8 January 2004, Queen Mary 2 has undertaken more than 420 voyages including over 200 transatlantic crossings and called at 182 ports in 60 countries. She remains the longest, tallest, widest ocean liner ever built as well as being the most famous and fastest passenger ship in operation today.

Mother created secret 'bucket list' for 8-year-old daughter dying of brain tumour, Hull, Britain - Jul 2014
*Full story: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/pdxk
When Emma Whitfield was told her young daughter Evie Kean had just months to live she was determined to fit a lifetime of memories into whatever time they had left together. But she could not ask Evie to write a bucket list because she did not want her child to know she was dying. So instead she asked the eight-year-old to list all the things she would do if she were the Queen - and then secretly set to work making them happen. Evie's wishes included meeting boy band One Direction, visiting Legoland and owning her own dog. And when she died 10 months later, in January this year, mum of three Emma had ticked off all the items on the "secret bucket list" without her daughter ever knowing it existed. Now Emma, a dinner lady at Evie's old primary school in Hull, says that thanks to various charities she has a lifetime of memories to cherish.
