3D Printing: Michelangelo's For The Masses

Rodkin's The Kiss in your kitchen or Michelangelo's David in the dining room, it's now possible to download 3D printable designs of museum masterpieces.

Eventually the entire world's cultural heritage of sculptural masterworks will be made available to the public by scanning and publishing their 3D printable files into the digital commons.

In a pioneering 3D printing project entitled, "Through A Scanner, Skulpturhalle", Cosmo Wenman will 3D scan images taken of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, including the Venus de Milo and Medusa Rondanini, and make the 3D digital files accessible to all.

Wenman has been granted copyright permission by The Skulpturhalle Basel museum in Switzerland to take photographs of their 2,000 high-quality plaster casts of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.

He said: "There are millennia of beautiful physical forms that can be digitized, propagated, and remixed over and over again in perpetuity, starting now.

"They can become the foundation of an unlimited combinatorial explosion of adaptation and creation, and for untold new artwork and art forms in the coming years."

Although the project is still in the fundraising stage through a Kickstarter campaign, which launched on June 6, Wenman, who is based in California, has already begun processing previously unpublished scans he has taken at other museums.

This includes the British Museum's famous colossal bust of Ramesses II which will be released onto Marketbot's Thinkingiverse 3D printing website at no cost and copyright free.

As well as creating a life-size 3D printed adaptation of the British Museum's Head ...

EXCLUSIVE: The Human Cost Of An Olympic Gold
For the elite athletes of the world it's a moment to dream of - standing on the podium to be crowned an Olympic champion. In all, 4,700 medals will be draped around the necks of competitors when the greatest show on Earth arrives in Britain next year. Yet, as the clock ticks down to London 2012 an investigation uncovers the human price people say they are paying for those precious medals.

By Richard Jones in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia

Children strain as they nudge their carts loaded with water for half a mile through the bitter cold across dirty sand to their traditional tent homes.

The long trek is something that the villagers of Hanbogd have gotten used too as six wells have dwindled to one in this south Gobi desert town.

"The water shortage is because of the mining," says Tsevegmid, a 72-year-old wrinkled nomad standing outside her tent home. "We used to be able to dig down a few meters and water hundreds of sheep now there's only enough water for fifty."

Mongolia is one of the earth's last great wildernesses; bitterly freezing in winter, boiling in summer. Three times the size of France with a population of just 2.6 million and an abundance of natural resources.

Hanbogd, is the closest town to the Oyu Tolgoi, the world's fifth largest mine with an estimated GBP 221 billion of gold, silver and copper, being developed by Canadian company Ivanhoe with Anglo-Australian company Rio Tinto.

The job of providing metal for the Olympic medals was awarded to Rio Tinto who are also sponsoring the Mongolian Olympic team.

But here in the Gobi the Olympics are likely to pass unnoticed amid the daily battle for survival. Families live in 'gers' - tents made from sheep-wool felt. Their only heating is one central cooking stove. Computers are a rarity and the internet non...
