MOGADISHU - HUMANITARIAN CRISIS
Women and children wait to receive a cooked meal at a food distribution organised by the WFP near the port in Mogadishu, Somalia on the 12th January, 2011. Today, the Prime Minister of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG), Mohamed Farmajo appealed to the Security Council for an increase in humanitarian aid as over one million Somalis face starvation.
As the UN security Council agree to deploy 4,000 thousand more African Union Troops to Somalia. Photographer Kate Holt joined a group of African Union troops on the frontline in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
For almost 4 years African Union Troops from Uganda and Burundi have assisted soldiers from SomaliaÕs Transitional Federal Government in the fight against Al Shabaab, an insurgent Islamic Group.
Mogadishu, SomaliaÕs Capital City, has lacked a functioning government for nearly twenty years and lawlessness prevails. Rival local militias fight for control of areas of the city in addition to frontline fighting between the Government and Al Shabaab groups.
The toll on the civilian population has been high. Millions of people have been displaced in the last twenty years, with thousands more killed and injured. The cities three hospitals are all lacking in drugs and trained personnel, and huge numbers of Somalis have fled to neighbouring countries and abroad.
The Prime Minister of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG), Mohamed Farmajo has recently appealed to the Security Council for an increase in humanitarian aid as over one million Somalis face starvation, and over 600,000 people in Mogadishu are now dependent on Food Aid - which is nearly eighty per cent of the cities population.
AMISOM Commanders are also calling for an increase in humanitarian assistance as they gaining increasing territory from Al Shabaab.
