Image grab from footage released by Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday February 15, 2022 shows soldiers from units of the Southern Military District load onto railway transport for departure to their garrison bases (points of permanent deployment) in an undisclosed location after completing drills at the Ukraine border. The Russian Defense Ministry said that while large-scale drills across the country continued, some units of the Southern and Western military districts had completed their exercises and started returning to base. The movements came as Russia signaled Monday (February 14) it is ready to keep diplomatic talks with the West about security concerns that led to the current Ukraine crisis, offering hope to resolve the situation within the diplomatic route as the U.S. and Europe increasingly fear an imminent invasion by Russia amid increased military buildup in Ukraine. More than 100,000 Russian troops have massed near the Ukrainian border. Russia denies planning an attack or invasion but says it could take unspecified military action if a list of demands is not met, including a promise from NATO never to admit Ukraine.

‘We are being abandoned’: when the energy bill goes up by £100,000 a day
If domestic bills are climbing, so too are those of schools, sheltered housing and museums. We speak to the people grappling with the soaring costs of keeping vital services running this winter.

Diana Leitch, chair of the trustees, and Lee Juby, CEO, at the Catalyst Science
Discovery Centre and Museum in Widnes.

Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and Museum in Widnes quoted gas bill for the year rose by 460%. The museum’s annual gas bill to the end of September 2022 was £9,700, but on 5 August it was quoted £48,582 for a renewed annual contract from 1 October.

Diana Leitch, said the museum would be forced to look at cutbacks, but would try to avoid reducing opening hours.

Security On High Alert In Kashmir Following Deadly Pahalgam Attack That Killed 26 Tourists
An Indian paramilitary soldier stands alert along a road in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 26, 2025. Security increases in Indian Kashmir after gunmen kill 26 tourists on April 22 in the popular destination of Pahalgam, an incident regional authorities describe as the most serious attack on civilians in recent years. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalate, sparking fear and uncertainty across the region. The nuclear-armed rivals move closer to military confrontation after Islamabad closes its airspace to Indian aircraft and warns that any attempt by New Delhi to interfere with water supplies under a decades-old treaty would be considered an act of war. In response, India reiterates its accusations that Pakistan continues to support ''cross-border terrorism,'' a claim Pakistan denies. (Photo by Firdous Nazir/NurPhoto)
