GREEDY GRIZZLY GETS A DOUBLE HELPING

This greedy grizzly appears to have bitten off more than she can chew - after catching two fish in her mouth at the same time.

Watched by three hungry cubs the mother bear was demonstrating the skill of fishing to her young.

Perched on the edge of a waterfall, she manages to keep her balance as the salmon unwittingly leap out of the water and into her menacing jaw.

She may look like a graceful and loving mother but she's also a vicious fighter - as one unfortunate bear found out when he tried to steal her cubs' dinner.

Lashing out with her enormous paws she proves she's a force not to be reckoned with.

And her cubs seem to be just as feisty as their mother - running off with their fish while the distracted adults are locked in battle.

These spectacular pictures were captured by wildlife photographer Roman Golubenko in Katmai National Park, Alaska.

The location is so remote it can only be reached by seaplane but the dedicated 44-year old was prepared to make the journey.

He said: "Travel and photography has been the meaning of my life ever since I was 10 years old - when I was given my first camera.

"I am one of those people who would search the ends of the worlds for at least one beautiful shot."

Mr Golubenko, from North Bergen, in New Jersey, America, spent four days at the park's Naknek Lake - where around 200 grizzlies gather each year for a feeding frenzy.

He said: "The most interesting moment was when the mother bear arrived at the waterfall with her three cubs. That's when another male bear scooted over next to her.

"Everything was peaceful over the river until the mother bear caught a fish and wanted to share it with her cubs and the male bear...

Blind British grandmother catches record breaking 214lb monster catfish, River Ebro, near Barcelona, Spain - 19 Jan 2010
BLIND BRITISH GRANDMOTHER CATCHES MONSTER 214LB CATFISH

A blind grandmother has entered the record books for catching the biggest ever freshwater fish by a British woman.

Shelia Penfold, 56, was nearly dragged into the river when the monster catfish took her bait.

She had to be directed by husband Alan and son Arthur as she tried to reel it in because she couldn't see the aquatic beast due to her poor eyesight.

But after a 30 minute tussle that left her trembling at the knees, Sheila finally landed the prized catch that weighed 214lbs or 15st 4lbs - the equivalent of two Cheryl Coles.

The fish dwarfed her husband's best effort of 176lbs during the fishing trip to Spain and set a record for the biggest freshwater fish caught by a British woman before.

It is also the biggest fish caught by a woman in Spain before.

Sheila, who is partially sighted but registered blind, said she only realised how big her catch was when she saw it close up.

Sheila, from Wandsworth, south west London, said: "I was exhausted but elated afterwards. The record has taken a while to sink in. I'm still walking around with a smile on my face.

"But it goes to show that just because you are blind it doesn't stop you breaking records like this."

Sheila, who stands at 5ft 3ins, used a bait of halibut pellets to snare the 8ft 2ins long catfish on the River Ebro near Barcelona.

She said: "I had three rods lined up on the bank and when one of them tipped over Arthur told me which one it was.

"I grabbed hold of it and was immediately pulled towards the water. Luckily I managed to stop myself and I started to reel it in.

"But for some reason I turned round and said that I didn't think it...

Panic over, and the crocodile has vanished back into the swampland beneath the waterweed. The elephants cross over, keeping a wary eye out., This is the shocking moment a crocodile grabbed the trunk of a baby elephant, hoping to get a hefty lunch.

Amazing Moment a Crocodile Grabs Baby Elephant's Trunk, Kruger National Park, South Africa
This baby elephant was given a huge shock when a camouflaged crocodile gave a tug on its trunk while it went for a drink.

The extraordinary scene was captured by amateur photographer Johan Opperman while taking pictures of a family of African Bush elephants grazing by a water hole and cooling down.

Under the watchful eye of its family, the young elephant headed to the edge of the waterhole to grab itself a drink.

However, in what has been described by experts as very rare behaviour, a crocodile pounced on the youngster, hoping for a kill by locking its jaws around its trunk.

Hearing the baby's distress calls, the herd of elephants, which are known for being very protective of their young, immediately came to its rescue, scaring off the croc by trumpeting and stamping around.

After the attack the herd stayed with the youngster.

When the baby had been tended to and the herd decided all was well, they crossed the dam together, just metres from where the crocodile had been hiding.

The scene was reminiscent of the famous Rudyard Kipling tale, 'The Elephant's Child', which tells the story of how the elephant got a long trunk when it was pulled on by a crocodile.

Johan, from Pretoria, in South Africa, captured the incredible moment while on a day trip in the country's Kruger National Park.

Wildlife photographer Rick Sheremeta snapped the brown bear nodding off in a river while still clutching it's tasty catch.

He explains: "I spent four days observing brown coastal bears at McNeil River Falls on the Alaskan Peninsula some 290 miles southwest of Anchorage.

"One adult female bear named Yolanda, by local guides, was particular interesting to watch - not only was she fairly high up in the bear pecking order thus allowing her unchallenged access to her favorite spot, but she was an excellent fisherwomen - snatching fish repeatedly time after time.

"On my last day out at the Falls, she was particularly active. She would snare a large fish and walk it into the shallows where she would sit and consume it at her leisure. She did this time and time again but never did we see her leave the water to take a nap break like all the other bears routinely did.

"Well, I guess all this frantic activity finally got the best of her - she finally wandered into the calm pool just as she had done numerous times before, sat down, cradled her catch under her arm and promptly nodded off.

"Unfortunately, her nap was fairly short lived since her little slumber pad also happened to be an active byway for other bears traveling to and from the River - after a few moments of blissful slumber she was rudely awakened by other some other denizen splashing through the water.

"Even though the scene was short-lived, it was a once in a million moment that I was lucky enough to document and capture with my camera."

At least she has a delicious snack to wake up t...

A man has caught a whopping 7ft 6inch fish which is more than a foot taller than him. Matt Gallant, 28, pulled the giant albino catfish, which weighed 180lbs, out of the River Ebro in Spain on the last day of his fishing trip. It is believed to be the third largest albino catfish ever caught in the world and towered over Matt, who is 6ft 2inches tall and weighs 12 stone 8oz. "I was stunned when I pulled it out of the river as it was so huge," said Matt, from Norwich, Norfolk. "It was my first ever catfish and I caught it on the last night in the last hour of our fishing trip. We took a photo, then put it back in the river." Matt, a pipefitter who has been fishing since the age of four, said the fish took 25 minutes to land on his rod, which he bought for GBP 30 on eBay. "I want to go back next year and try and break the world record for a normal catfish," he added. Albino catfish are rare because they are white and stand out in the water, so when they are small many of them get eaten.

Young Bear Leaps At The Chance Of Salmon For Supper
This young bear shows its incredible diving ability as it charges head first into a river after a fish.

The coastal grizzly bear hurtled into the water after spotting the pink salmon swimming upstream on its way to spawn.

Eager for the fish not to be 'the one that got away', the youngster pounced on the salmon as it swam in the Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska.

Traditionally, bears gather by the river to intercept the fish on their way to spawn.

This year they have been far more aggressive going after the salmon due to lower numbers following overfishing.

Photographer Roman Golubenko said: "This year, naturalists predicted a large salmon run in that area.

"The first wave of the fish run began but as a result, the fisherman took out more than 90 per cent of the salmon.

"All of a sudden, the salmon run stopped and the authorities put an emergency stop to further fishing but it was already too late.

"As a result, only a few individual fish got to the lake area where the bears usually wait.

"I spotted this bear chasing after a salmon, since the fish were so scarce the bears were hungry and chased with triple energy".

Roman, from North Bergen, in New Jersey, added: "The bear was a very good diver and seemed determined to get its fish".

Otter Lotta Fun: Mother and Pup Play Hide and Seek
    Peek-a-boo, where are you!?

A cheeky sea otter pup appears to be playing hide and seek with its mummy in these hilarious pictures.

The images show the white California sea otter mother paddling around a barnacle-covered post trying to locate the youngster.

But, floating on its back, the pup seems to be pacing its swim to just stay out of sight as it circles the obstacle.

The youth eventually caught up with it's seemnigly exasperated mom - who promptly gave it an affectionate nuzzle.

Michael Yang captured the funny scene at Moss Landing Harbor in California.

He explains: "A California Sea Otter mom and her pup were swimming and foraging for food around an old post. The mother would dive for food while her pup would swim around waiting for her.

"In the pictures, the sea otter pup appears to be playing hide and go seek with its mother. As the mother rounds the post on one end, her pup rounds the post on the other end. The pup even seems to give the camera a mischievous look with its eyes.

"Sea otter pups can't dive for their own food because their muscles are not developed enough and because they are too buoyant from their mothers constantly cleaning their fur, infusing it with air.

"Even when the pups can dive, they often bring up items of little value, such as the rock this pup had pulled off the post. Thus, the pups are reliant on their mothers for usually half a year or more for food."

A man has pleaded guilty to endangering the safety of persons on the railway after being caught on CCTV throwing another man against the side of a moving freight train. During the attack in July last year drunken Daniel Worgan swung Robert Evans into one of the fast-moving train's cargo containers after Mr Evans defended some girls he had insulted. In CCTV footage Worgan can be seen plucking Evans from his group of friends and spinning him around before flinging him ten feet across the platform straight into the side of the train. Evans bounces off the side of the train and immediately hits the floor, only narrowly avoiding falling down the gap between platform and train. One of Evan's distressed friends rushes to his aid and helps him to his feet as callous Worgan calmly walks away. The CCTV footage helped to identify Worgan, who has now been given a six-month suspended sentence, ordered to pay GBP 500 compensation and carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Eels On Wheels For Hungry Bird
It was 'eels on wheels' for this Cormorant as it dived beneath the murky sea at Lyme Regis looking for dinner.

Despite the terrible conditions making visibility virtually zero, the hungry bird managed to spot its prey beneath the waves and went in for the kill.

However, the slippery eel was clearly not keen to be anyone's supper and put up a spirited fight.

The Cormorant was forced to wrestle with the troublesome sea creature as it tried to wrap itself around its throat.

Ultimately, however, the eel's resistance proved to be futile and the victorious Cormorant tossed it in the air before swallowing it down.

The Cormorant is Britain's most prolific underwater avian predator and dines on fish, small eels and even water snakes.

It dives from the surface, often making a characteristic half-jump, to give a more streamlined entry into the water.

Once underwater it propel itself after its prey using its feet.

Flipping Frog On The Menu For Hungry Heron

Kermit would do well to avoid this particular swamp.

One frog found it wasn't easy being green when a heron not only selected it for lunch, but subjected it to some controlled flipping - prior to swallowing it whole.

But not before giving the heron a raspberry by sticking its tongue out.

Photographer Nate Chappell captured the scene at Kitty Hollow County Park in Missouri City, Texas.

He explains: "Each evening for a spell a group of yellow-crowned night herons would fly in to feed on frogs and bugs in the swampy grass there.

"These images show a night heron which has caught a good sized frog.

"The heron had to flip the frog in the air several times in order to get it in right position to go down the hatch.

"Finally it was able to swallow the frog and you can clearly see the tongue of the frog sticking out as it awaits its fate.

"The night heron was preoccupied with eating his catch so it allowed me a close approach for some nice photographs."
