Man, 24, arrested over mass tree felling in Surrey Police have been hunting suspect for a month, with up to 60 trees having been cut down
Police officers hunting the person who chopped down 50 trees along the banks of the Thames in Surrey have arrested a 24-year-old man who they said was found with chainsaws in his van. Council officials and detectives were left baffled by the series of tree fellings which started on 21 March in a two-mile stretch between Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge, both in Elmbridge, Surrey. About 50 to 60 trees were felled – many of them mature trees more than 20ft high.

In what was described by one onlooker as being "ludicrously early", Edinburgh's christmas tree was lifted into place on Sunday (4 Nov).

Photographer Tom Duffin captured the process as the huge spruce had its trunk shaved and was hoisted into a vertical position.

He explains: "The tree was lifted into place on The Mound today, which some folk think seems a wee bit early. The council face criticism for the chopping down of 51 trees in Princes St Gardens East, seemingly to make way for a larger Christmas Market."
