Raising a Family Behind Bars: Inmates Families Move Into Prison After Typhoon Haiyan
A New York-based photographer journeyed to the Philippines to meet families who were forced to relocate to prison after Typhoon Yolanda left them homeless.

Lawrence Sumulong went to the Leyte Provincial Jail in April this year, to document the unusual situation where a large number of displaced families have been forced to move in with their incarcerated relatives.

At the Leyte Provincial Jail, women and children walk freely among inmates.

While most inmates claim to be serving time for petty crimes such as theft or drug trafficking, their photo releases reveal many more are actually serving time for more serious crimes.

Lawrence shot the moving series in one day, and assembled the photos in a moving photo series titled Raising a Family Behind Bars.

Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) cut across nine regions in the central Philippines on November 8, 2013, leaving behind a wide swath of destruction.

The storm was a category five, with wind gusts up to 235 miles per hour, causing massive landslides and flooding.

Over 14 million people were affected, including five million who saw their homes damaged or destroyed, while over 6000 people lost their lives.

Lawrence wanted to investigate what had happened to the people who were left with nothing after the typhoon, and in particular those who had no choice but to take refuge in prison.

"My assignment was to verify whether families of the inmates were continuing to live inside the destroyed jail, which was a story that journalist, Aya Lowe had originally broken.

"Leading up to my trip, there was news that access to the jail was restricted and the families had long since relocated."

Lawrence, who currently works as a photo editor at Jazz in the Lincoln Centre, explains: ...

'Shock And Awe': New Fathers Photographed on Day of Baby's Birth
Petrified, ecstatic, tearful - the range of emotions experienced by brand new fathers have been captured in this poignant set of images.

Photographer Dave Young was present through the nights of 23rd to 26th April at London's Chelsea and Westminster hospital documenting the reactions of new dads minutes after their partners gave birth.

His charming work sees unguarded reactions from the men, coupled with a phrase or few lines of words they would like their child to live by.

Sentiments range from "Live your life as if it were a constant pursuit of happiness" to "No tattoos until you're 30 and always be nice to your mum!"

The pictures were commissioned for The Book of Dads, a special Father's Day charity edition of The Book of Everyone personalised books (http://thebookofeveryone.com/borne/). 50% of the proceeds of the book go towards supporting Borne, a UK premature birth charity (http://borne.org.uk/).

Steve Hanson, co-founder of The Book of Everyone, says, "The idea came about when we wanted to do something special to celebrate Father's Day. The Book of Everyone is a new start up run by three dads, one of whom has just had a baby and still has the look of wonder - or is it terror? - on his face. We thought it?d be fun to celebrate that awe, worry and relief on the faces of new dads who have just witnessed the birth of their sons or daughters. Dave Young was the perfect photographer to capture these once in a lifetime moments."

Ahead of Father's Day (June 15th) the The Book of Everyone site allows you to fashion a personalised 50 page Book of Dads, which you create by adding photos, personal tweaks and special messages for your dad. http://thebookofeveryone.com/borne/

Singer Celebrates Record Store Day Face Painting Album Covers Onto Her Face
A woman has celebrated her favourite albums - by painting them on her face.

Make up artist and singer Natalie Sharp wanted to mark the recent national Record Store Day, so used her skills to reproduce a variety of Vinyl record covers on her own face.

London-based Natalie, 32, works as a make-up artist by day and performs in her band Lone Taxidermist by night.

Based in Hackney, her make-up works sees her involved in body painting, special effects and theatrical and commercial makeup.

The artist, originally from Cumbria, said: "I wanted to do something special for record store day this year because for as long as I can remember I have always been face painting kids as Easter bunnies over the Easter holidays.

"I was having a bit of a rant on Facebook about having to work at the weekend and a friend suggested I paint myself as a piece of Vinyl."

Taken with the idea, Natalie set to work and painted eight memorable albums onto her own face, including artists such as Talking Heads album 'Remain in Light, Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures', Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica' and Kraftwerk's Autobahn album.

"Originally I planned to do 10 faces some of which got vetoed for being too difficult. The first face I did, which was Grizzly Bears' Veckatimest album, took me nearly 7 hours and after that I started to seriously reconsider the idea," she says.

Natalie spent three days carefully re-creating the vinyl artworks, working completely free hand with no stencil tracings, and relying only on a...

Bina Devi and her grand daughter Aaratia Kumari from a village in Haripur said "we lost everything in the flood, we don't have andthing apart from these clothes because we had no time to take any belongings as the flood water came so fast, we escaped on a bamboo bridge and paddled to here in Koshi. The army gave us emergency biscuits and water but we were not given any food for four days"
Flooding in Sunsari, Nepal - 04 Sep 2008
Around 60,000 villagers in Nepal have been displaced due to flooding caused by the Kosi river breaching its defences three weeks ago and changing its course. The conditions have also affected nearly five million people in neighbouring India. Both governments now face the task of feeding and housing the many refugees who are living in relief camps. It is thought that some people will be forced to stay in these camps for up to six months. Already disease is becoming a problem and officials have said that at least 14 people living in Nepalese aid camps have already died after becoming ill. Both India and Nepal accuse each other of being to blame for the failure of the flood walls that should have prevented the disaster.

The picture shows Steel Star by Yuriy Stolypin, 30, and was taken in Saint-Petersburg, Lakhta. They said: "For a very long time I have been hatching the idea of this photo. I wanted to take a photo of the tallest skyscraper in Europe, shrouded in morning fog. But for this shot I had to wait a long time for all the weather conditions to coincide. I regularly monitored the weather and looked into the city cameras to make sure that all shooting conditions were favourable for the intended shot, since I live very far from the shooting location. When everything coincided, early in the morning I called a taxi, arrived at the skyscraper, raised the drone as high as possible and took this picture."The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), which celebrates its 170th birthday this year, in association with AccuWeather, has put the shortlisted pictures on their website and people can visit photocrowd.com/wpotyvote to vote until September 25.The popular competition, which is now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from around the world.

All along their journey, refugees go from one transit camp to the other.

Photographer Frederic Seguin captured a photo series of Refugees 'in transit' as they make their way between camps in Macedonia. The series shows the strength and resilience of refugees as they try to make their way to safety.

Frederic said: "I wanted to take in all the different aspects of one of these transit camps, through the eyes of refugees.

"From crossing the border to leaving on a train, my pictures show you what it is inside and outside the transit camp of Gevgelija in the south of Macedonia."

With this photo series, Frederic wanted to emphasize the changing political situation, which has affected the transit camps.
