The Queen was in Portsmouth today to tour a museum dedicated to the D-Day landings during the Second World War. 2009 marks the 65th anniversary of the Normandy invasion in June 1944. Accompanied by Prince Philip, the Queen toured the D-Day museum, which is marking its 25th anniversary. While there she viewed the Overlord Embroidery, which was commissioned by Lord Dulverton of Batsford as a tribute to the sacrifice and heroism of those who took part in the D-Day landings. The royal couple also attended a reception for the Portsmouth branch of the Normandy Veterans Association and members of the Women's Land Army. Throughout the day the Queen was also presented with the keys of the city at Portsmouth Guildhall. She then met military personnel who have recently returned from active duty overseas during a reception at Portsmouth Naval Base. The royal couple concluded their visit as the lunch guests of the Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Alan Massey

June 5, 2017 - Arromanches-Les-Bains, Normandy, France - Charles Norman Shay (age 92), a Native American soldier from WWII, returns to Omaha beach for the 73rd anniversary of D-Day.. .On D-Day 1944, Charles Shay was one of over five hundred North American Indian soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy. Shay served in the 1st Infantry Division, 'The Big Red One'. He was only nineteen years old and was a recently drafted medic. .Shay was assigned to an assault platoon in the 16th Regiment, and was part of the first wave that landed on June 6 on bloody Omaha Beach under very heavy German fire. 'The Big Red One' sustained about 2,000 casualties on D-Day; most were killed during the first hour of the landings. Many of the wounded were treated by Charles Shay.
