Jasper, garnet, sometimes sapphires: pocketfuls of treasure at Gemstone Beach
At Orepuki, on the remote south coast of New Zealand's South Island, a bed of riches colour the shoreline, bringing gem hunters from near and far.
Jasper, hydro-grossular garnet in pinks, greens and yellows, patterned fossilised worm-trails, spotted argillite, frosty white quartz, speckled granites, pink-flecked rhodonite and - in rare cases - the unmistakeable blue of sapphire, colour the low-tide line.
The gems likely started their lengthy journey to Gemstone Beach during the last ice age, roughly 16,000-18,000 years ago. As the landscape of Fiordland - the dramatic mountainous region of the lower South Island - altered and released its rocks.

'EMERALD KING' KEEPS FORTUNE IN GEMS IN LONDON HOTEL BEDROOM
Mr Howard Hoeffer, 55 year old New York jeweller, is staying at a London hotel with emeralds valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds in an old wardrobe trunk in his room.
The 125 pounds of rough stones are samples of the product of the Muza mines in Colombia, and Mr Hoeffer says he has bought two years entire output of the mines - about £1,000,000 worth. The mines closed down 14 years ago, but their last two years output were in the vaults of a Colombian bank. Mr Hoeffer has agreed to help in financing the reopening of the mines and plans to make the emeralds the most popular precious stone. He has brought his samples to England to be cut and polished.
Photo Shows: Mr howard Hoeffer tipping a bag of uncut emeralds onto a table in his london hotel room. The stones are worth thousands of pounds.
