FOUR-YEAR-OLD TWIN SISTERS BATTLE CANCER TOGETHER

A family have spoken of their heartache after their four-year-old, identical twin daughters were diagnosed with cancer within days of each other.

Emma Garwood has described the "living nightmare" of discovering that both her daughters Megan and Gracie have leukaemia.

The brave twins were diagnosed within a week of each other and have been receiving treatment for the past five months.

It was younger twin Megan who was diagnosed first, with Gracie, who is older by two minutes, following shortly afterwards.

It was last August when Megan first became unwell and her GP immediately referred her to hospital.

Here she was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia before being rushed to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge; she began chemotherapy that very night.

Emma said: "It all seems like a dream sequence. I still just assumed she had a bug. You never think anything this bad could happen to you.

"But suddenly a doctor says your daughter has cancer and moments later we are being rushed to Addenbrooke's in an ambulance with all the blue lights flashing. And then at midnight you watch your daughter begin an intense course of chemotherapy".

The only comfort for Emma, 38, and her husband Mark, 35, who also have a younger daughter, was the reassurance that the chances of Gracie having the same disease were remote.

Tragically however, just days later she fell unwell and her worried parents brought her to Addenbroke's to be checked over.

Mrs Garwood said: "She thought she was only there to visit her sister, but they took one look at her and before we knew it she was moved into the bed next to Megan for treatment.

Joyful hugging her mother Gracie goat.
You've Goat To Be Kicking Me
Here's a kid who is more than a handful.

Joyful the young goat gets a kick out of trying to get her mum's attention.

The playful four-month-old is pictured trying to hug her mother, showing her a stick and - hilariously - hitting her with a flying kick.

Owner TC Morgan photographed Joyful and Gracie on his ranch in Chino, California.

He explains: "On the days I took these images, I spent considerable time watching them interact. Joyful was always running around actively investigating the new world and enjoying playing with everything and everyone she could.

"Periodically she would check in with her mother, and from time to time connected with her by jumping on her and sometimes hugging her.

"When the image I titled "Lets Kick Mommy" was taken, Gracie had been laying down resting, while Joyful was running, jumping and skipping as I took photos of her.

"Suddenly Joyful decided to reconnect with her mommy once again and became airborne, landing on mommy, and, as mommy started to stand up, launched off, kicking her in the process.

"I experience Joyful as a very curious, energetic, playful, high energy, happy go lucky spirited kid goat. She is far more adventurous than the other little kid goats that live here on the ranch. She shares a special bond with her mother Gracie and the two enjoy one another's company immensely."

    'Hensioners' Prove They Aren't Chicken
A group of 'hensioners' are taking part in an innovative project that has seen them paired up with chickens.

The aim of the HenPower initiative is to help people - and particularly men - who are part of assisted living schemes to feel more engaged.

The 18-month long project has seen men and women from Gateshead equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to care for their very own hen.

As part of this participants have been involved in designing their own hen house, choosing which hens they like, learning how to care for them and how to rear chicks.

One of the main aims of HenPower is to encourage older people - with an emphasis on men - who live in supported housing to access activities which are socially engaging and relevant to them.

And it has proven to be such a success that there are now hopes to roll out the initiative across the country.

The Gateshead groups, who have affectionately become known as 'hensioners', have even started running 'hen road shows'.

This sees them take their learning to other older people and share with them firsthand their chicken related experiences

Douglas Hunter, Director of Equal Arts, who manages the project, says: "The project aims to improve the quality of life for older people and particularly older men who maybe isolated or lonely.

"Older men's first experience of care settings is often during a crises point. We want this to change and for older men to feel empowered and confident about any transition to living with care".
