Pro-democracy march on anniversary of passing of civil rights leader John Lewis
A girl plays in a fountain on a sweltering afternoon during a rally and march against the Trump administration’s drastic funding cuts to vital services and abrogation of civil rights and liberties, on the anniversary of the passing of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis, in Washington, D.C., U.S., on July 17, 2025. 50501 organizers chose the date for a national mobilization to honor Lewis’ legacy and continue fighting for the equal rights and civil liberties granted by the U.S. Constitution. ‘It’s devastating’: summer in Canada’s Arctic region brings severe heatwaves
Temperatures in Canada - and especially the Arctic - are climbing faster than the global average, with highs of 33C.
The arrival of August in the Arctic typically hints that autumn, with its dwindling daylight and cold weather, will soon return.
Seasonal change in the north is rapid and, for local people, summer marks a brief reprieve from months of bitter cold. But a heatwave that is currently hovering over the community 130 miles (209km) north of the Arctic Circle threatens to shatter its all-time heat record.
Residents believe the town's heat record of 33 degrees will fall by the end of the week, with warmer weather expected.

Warm weather has proven helpful to the Arctic's largest greenhouse- but sustained temperatures mean the community garden requires watering multiple times a day.

'Beat the heat': Madrid looks to cool off with culture amid climate crisis
Initiative aims to coax visitors and local people into air-conditioned venues during sweltering summer afternoons.
With summer temperatures that can reach 41C (106F), the streets of the Spanish capital are not a pleasant place to be during the hottest hours of the day.
The new programme, called Refugiate en la cultura (Take Shelter in Culture), offers free flamenco shows - in the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, and the Royal Collections Gallery - as well as free comic monologues in libraries and discounted cinema tickets for screenings before 5pm.
Flamenco dancer El Yiyo and guitarist Rafael Andujar perform at the Sala de las Musas hall in the Prado Museum on July 10, 2024 in Madrid, Spain. The initiative is intended to encourage people to avoid the high outdoor temperatures and seek sanctuary and entertainment in cool indoor spaces.
