Meulaboh, about 175 kilometers south of Banda Aceh on Sumatra's western coast was devastated by the tsunamis caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that killed over 160 thousand persons in south Asia. Among the hardest-hit areas Meulaboh's estimated deaths are 40,000 people out of a population of 120,000. It was just 150km from the epicenter of the earthquake. The tsunami destroyed buildings and washed fishing boats 3km inland. US Marines zoomed ashore on a high-tech hovercraft carrying tons of food, water and a forklift to help the tsunami-wrecked Indonesian town. (Sungsu Cho/POLARIS) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) -

The main hospital in Indonesia's tsunami-devastated Aceh province tentatively reopens. Humanitarian Aid workers from Mexico brought toys for the children. The destruction of Aceh's medical infrastructure has been a major obstacle to the rehabilitation of the province, with just one hospital left operational and thousands of medical staff killed in the December 26 disaster. More than 94,000 people perished when a 9.0-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Aceh triggered tsunamis that crashed into the province. (Sungsu Cho/POLARIS) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) -

Nearly 2,000 Marines in two ships diverted from duty in Iraq are now afloat off Meulaboh. The ships carry two dozen helicopters, heavy equipment such as bulldozers and forklifts, and tons of food. The landing came after several days of negotiations between the Marines and the local military. It was conducted on a smaller scale than planned, only about 10 Marines came ashore bringing first aid supplies to the survivors.
