Lebanon Palestians flee Nahr al-Bared refugee camp
An elderly Palestinian woman sits in a car after being evacuated by a Red Crescent ambulance fleeing Nahr el-Bared refugee camp, after clashes between the Lebanese military and militants from Fatah Islam continued into the second week of fighting, in northern Lebanon on Sunday, June 3, 2007.
**The Lebanese Army has been engaged in a battle with Fatah-al-Islam, an Islamist militant organization, since May 20, 2007, when fighting broke out in the Nahr-al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp. The escalation which has followed, has been the most severe internal conflict since the end of Lebanon's 15 year civil war (1975-1990). During the fighting, the Lebanese army has taken heavy casualties, losing more than 70 soldiers already.
The Lebanese Army, for years underfunded and neglected, kept in a minor role by the factions and Syrian armed forces that controlled the country, has been forced to assume a new, active role. The force remains inexperienced and ill-equipped, however, lacking critical supplies and training. Although the US has rushed supplies to the army, their recent incursions into the Nahr el-Bared camp have exposed the vast array of problems they face.
