His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburghs special relationship with the Armed Forces
FILE PHOTO: HRH Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh attending the home coming parade of the Queens Royal Hussars after they completed their operational tour of Afghanistan.
The Prince presented many of the returning soldiers including those who had been injured whilst on operations with the operational service medal. The unit had been deployed as part of 20 Armoured Brigade on Operation Herrick 15.
His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh had a close personal relationship with the Armed Forces throughout his life. More than 700 members of the Armed Forces will be involved in His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburghs funeral tomorrow.
Armed Forces personnel from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force will provide ceremonial support at the funeral. This includes units with a special relationship with The Duke of Edinburgh, who will assemble in the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle. The Royal Navy will provide a Piping Party to play music as the coffin enters St Georgeís Chapel. The Army will provide a Guard of Honour outside the chapel and fire processional minute guns. The Royal Air Force will line the route of the procession as the coffin moves to the chapel.

A young member of the Household Cavalry is seen here on guard at Horse Guards Parade in London today (16/01/2020).
Defence Minister for Germany, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, visited the UK today. Her visit began this morning with a Guard of Honour provided by No 7 Company Coldstream Guards with musical support from The Band of the Irish Guards on Horse Guards Parade, and a meeting in the historic rooms of the Army’s London headquarters.
The German Defence Minister was met in the front yard of the historic Horse Guards building by the Secretary of State for UK Defence Ben Wallace and Major General Christopher John Ghika CBE.
She then moved to Horse Guards Parade where she was invited to inspect the Guard of Honour by Captain Piers Gamberini in fluent German.
The Defence Ministers went into the Horse Guards Building to hold their meeting in rooms that historically were used by the Duke of Wellington when he commanded the British Army and considered the forces now unified under modern Germany as his greatest military allies.© MOD Crown Copyright / eyevine

Gurkha recruits are presented their rank slides while maintaining social distancing during their pass out parade at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick.
Gurkha recruits have marked the end of their Phase 1 training at Infantry Training Centre Catterick with a pass-out parade on Helles Square.
The future soldiers of the British Army are trained at the northern Unit, which currently runs four versions of the Combat Infantrymans Course (Line Infantry, Foot Guards, PARAs and Gurkhas).
The ceremony also coincides with The Republic of Nepal Day, which is celebrated annually in both the capital city of Kathmandu and around the world, commemorating the country becoming a federal democratic republic on 28th May 2008.
The day concludes with the Muster Parade, where the top recruit of the day will be selected and presented with their Kukri (a Gurkha knife) as a prize for their hard work and achievements.

Image of Gunner Joanna Waddington taking great care of Frank, one of the horses at Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery.
As the country entered lock-down in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, horses from Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery were sent to the Leicestershire countryside for an early rest and recuperation period. This is usually reserved for the summer months after they have completed their annual ceremonial season, including firing a gun salute on Coronation Day on 2 June, however in line with Public Health England guidance, only a small number of officers, soldiers and horses from Kings Troop remained in London to carry out essential training and maintenance.
Kings Troop, which is a ceremonial unit in the British Army, consists of around 140 Household Troops and 100 horses, all based in George VI Lines in Woolwich, South East London. Their primary role is ceremonial, as the saluting battery of Her Majesty's Household providing ceremonial gun salutes to mark coronation days, royal birthdays, royal births, and other state ceremonial occasions. Soldiers from Kings Troop also conduct military training exercises, take part in military sports competitions, and have even featured with their horses in Downton Abbey.
The UK Armed Forces are due to resume training that was paused due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and Defence activity is gradually scaling up in accordance with Public Health England guidelines on social distancing. The horses from Kings Troop that were sent to grass during the lockdown period, are now undertaking a seven week reconditioning programme back in Woolwich. This involves coat, mane and tail maintenance, clipping and caring for their feet, re-fitting horse shoes and providing all horses with a gradual fitness programme to bring them back into work.© MOD Crown Copyright / eyevine

Image of Chelsea Pensioners watching a ‘virtual’ Guard of Honour within the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London.
Troops from the King’s Royal Hussars (KRH) Public Duties Roulement Company (PDRC) provided a ‘virtual’ Guard of Honour for their Colonel-in-Chief, HRH The Princess Royal, at the Royal Hospital Chelsea (RHC) in London.
The occasion was to recognise HRH’s 50 years of service as Colonel-in-Chief of the unit (first as 14/20 King’s Hussars and then as KRH) and included the gifting of a bespoke medal to the Princess. The parade was static and social distanced with a film crew capturing the event on a ’live’ link through to HRH and enabling the ‘virtual’ presentation of the medal.
The choice of the Royal Hospital as a venue is significant as it provided an entertaining but responsible and safe event for the In-Pensioners, notably those who share a link to HRH through her various military commitments and the current Governor of the Hospital is General Sir Adrian Bradshaw KCB OBE, who is also the Colonel of the Regiment.© MOD Crown Copyright / eyevine

Soldiers from 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards, The Welsh Cavalry, are learning survival skills on the Defence Training Estate, Otterburn in Northumberland and testing them as part of a military competition.
Over 150 soldiers are taking part in the Regiment's Patrol and Survival Competition, which tests their fitness, stamina and military skills.
The competition sees every soldier learn the necessary skills and procedures required to stay alive in a potentially dangerous situation. This includes knife handling and sharpening, building improvised shelters, finding and treating water for drinking, lighting fires, catching food, preparing and cooking food (chicken, rabbits, fish and crickets).
Following the lessons, each four-person team will head out on a 45 km patrol carrying only essential survival equipment. Each team has up to 36 hours to complete the patrol and will pass six checkpoints and four challenge points along the route. At each challenge point, there will be a Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract (SERE)-related task in which teams will put into practice their newly-learnt skills.

Image of an Army reservist looking through the scope of his rifle, during an exercise in South West Scotland.
Army Reservists from the 7th Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Scotland (7 SCOTS) have deployed to South West Scotland to learn one of the most difficult roles in infantry combat, that of fighting in an urban area. This is known as Operations in a Built up Area (OBUA). The tough but rewarding course provides attendees with the skills needed to survive in such a complex environment.
The Army Reservists who make up 7 SCOTS are recruited from the northern parts of Scotland. Often they combine their Army career with other, full time employment. With its headquarters in Perth, 7 SCOTS is one of two reserve infantry battalions in Scotland and in recent years members of the Battalion have deployed with their Regular Army colleagues to Operations and Exercises across the world.
