    NEWS: Bangladesch: Überschwemmungen in Chittagong
Sept. 1, 2015 - a boy returns from school during tidal flood in Chittagong...tidal flood devastated most of the area of chittagong city.millions of people marooned in tidal flood and life become stand still...In the past few years, Tidal surge water levels rising significantly above the tide levels that astronomy predicts - has begun to affect the city as much as twice a day, resulting in frequent flooding of residential and business areas...If things continue to worsen, most area of Chittagong could become completely submerged in the near future. ..A World Bank study that was released June 19,2013 forecasts a two degrees Celsius rise in the worlds average temperature in the next decades..Considering the present warming trends, the reports warns that even 20 to 30 years from now shifting rain patterns could leave some areas of the country under water and some others without enough water for power generation, irrigation or even drinking..Flood affected areas could increase by as much as 29 percent for a 2.5 degrees Celsius temperature rise in Bangladesh, says the report..If the sea level rises 65 cm in 2080,around 40 percent arable land will be lost in southern Bangladesh, it notes about 20 million people in the coastal areas are affected by salinity in drinking water and rising sea levels...Chittagong is often regarded as the commercial and industrial capital of Bangladesh. .Estimated population of the city is more than 6.5 million. The Port of Chittagong is an important driver of the Bangladeshi economy, handling over 90% of the country's international trade. The effects of climate change rising sea level and sea surface temperature, emission of carbon by first world country, deforestation, global warming have brought a sudden vulnerability to the lives and livelihoods of people living in Chittagong city and coastal areas of Bangladesh (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

  • The maelstrom under Greenland's glaciers could slow future sea level rise

The maelstrom under Greenland's glaciers could slow future sea level rise
A pioneering mission into a mysterious and violent world may reveal 'speed bumps' on the way to global coastal inundation.

Stadium-sized blocks of ice crashing from the soaring face of the Kangerlussuup glacier in western Greenland. Fierce underwater currents of meltwater are shooting out from its base and visibility below the surface is virtually zero thanks to a torrent of suspended mud and sand. ItÕs little wonder scientists have never explored this maelstrom.

Yet today, they are sending in a multimillion-dollar remotely operated submarine, potentially to its death.

NEWS - Bedrohte Gletscher auf Grönland
Aerial photo of supra-glacial lakes and meltwater rivers located on the Greenland ice cap, about 80 kilometers east of Kangerlussuaq. On the surface of the Greenland ice sheet is many lakes from melting showing turquoise waters.Scientists believe a previously overlooked side-effect of global warming - the formation of lakes on top of glaciers - could greatly increase the rate of melting of the vast Greenland ice sheet. Melting ice from the coast of Greenland could make a much bigger contribution to rising sea levels than was first thought. People enjoy the Diamond Beach Right next to the famous Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon you will find a black volcanic sand beach where icebergs from the lagoon drift ashore and create the most magical setting. The blue, black, transparent and white icebergs sit on the beach and slowly melt and you can walk amongst them, see through many of them and play around them.

The icebergs originate at the glacier, Breidamerkurjokull, an outlet from Europe's largest ice cap Vatnajokull and therefore is the beach called Breidamerkursandur in Icelandic (sandur means sand). Actually, most Icelanders aren't familiar with the name the Diamond Beach as it is very recent and solely used in English.

NEWS - Griechenland: Schnee und Kälte im Flüchtlingslager in Thessaloniki
January 14, 2017 - Thessaloniki, Greece - Refugees are recovering from the heavy winter conditions in Greece. They are trying to get back to normal life in the camp in Thessaloniki on 14 January 2017. After 6 days of subzero temperatures, today it is sunny and the temperature is about 5-6C. They try to dry their clothes and houses, to repair the ceiling in the houses or tents as they had water leaking in their place. Children although are having fun as there is still melting snow. As they snow melts it seems dangerous for the children as the houses and tents didn't have eletricity, refugees did their own wiring with connections exposed and covered by the snow. The governemt brought also some contractors with workers to repair major problems in the houses and also cleaners. Many refugees are sick and they need proper healthcare. There is doctor in the camp, but not enough for so many people.Still there are problems as there is not running water.
REPORTAGE: Schiffswerft in Dhaka
Sept. 16, 2015 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - Sept 16, 2015 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - Ship building industry in Bangladesh spreading rapidly where workers from all ages work together. The working condition here is serious and not suitable for any children. Conditions are hot and often dangerous. Even workers dont use minimum safety guard. Therefore accidents happen very frequently. Children who work here are growing up without education which has been leading them towards uncertain future. The reason of child labor in such dangerous working condition is cheap labor and poverty. According to child labor law of Bangladesh it is prohibited in serious working condition but there is no implication of it. The current socio-economic condition of Bangladesh is unable to solve child labor problem right away. It's not possible to banned child labor completely at any time. The thing is these children's families are in need. They don't have any other options other than work for money and help their family. If government really going to banned child labor in the country, the situation would be worse than this. Their living of standards even go down more. So before banning child labor, government needs to develop economic condition of their family first (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)
