Researching the moving rocks of Racetrack Playa, California, America - 11 Aug 2010
Mandatory Credit: Photo by NASA/GSFC/Leva McIntire / Rex Features ( 1216681h )
In some cases, the trail starts narrow and gets wider, as in this photo.
The Mystery of the Moving Rocks
It's a puzzling sight that the world of science has never found a conclusive answer for - rocks that seemingly move across the plains of California.
Since the 1940s researchers have documented trails left from the movement of boulders on so-called playas, or dry lakes, in Death Valley.
Amazingly, rocks as big as 700 pounds have been subject to the unexplained phenomena that sees them seemingly glide over the parched landscape - even changing direction on their path.
Some rocks travel in pairs, leaving two tracks perfectly in synch along straight stretches and around curves. Others seem undecided about direction and travel back and forth. sometimes travelling the length of several football fields.
Most cases see the trails leading to resting rocks, but in others they have disappeared.
Now a team of seventeen undergraduate and graduate students from the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Academy (LPSA) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center have begun an investigation.
They travelled to the Racetrack and nearby Bonnie Claire playas this summer to investigate how these rocks move across the nearly empty flats.
"When you see these amazing rocks and trails," says Mindy Krzykowski, an intern from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, "you really get into coming up with your own ideas about what's going on."
For each rock and trail the students recorded GPS coordinates and took photographs. They also dug up small sensors called Hygrochrons buried three months earlier by one of the trip leaders. From these, the interns were able to capture the electronically stored temperature and humidity data.
They marked the trail boundaries by slipping coloured pushpins into cracks in the clay and measured...

'Feet First' - photos documenting a couples travels through their relationship until a third pair of feet join them - 05 Jan 2012

Pic 1
Wandering Feet: Couple Document Travels By Foot Pics (& Baby Joins The Fun)
This collection of photographs document a British couple's travels over six years by just showing their feet.
London photographer Tom Robinson was sat on Brighton beach with his new girlfriend Verity in 2005 when he took a picture of their feet pointing out to sea.
Ever since then he has continued to document their travels and experiences in this way resulting in a collection of over 90 personal photos called 'Feet First'.
The photographs never once show their faces but in 2011 the series takes on a twist with the arrival of a third pair of feet - their daughter Matilda.
Tom and Verity Robinson both 30 have travelled extensively through South East Asia, South and Central America finding themselves lucky enough to experience some of the world's natural wonders by visiting a total of 31 countries.
Highlights of their photo album include their feet making their way across the Maekok River in Thailand; standing on volcanic rock in Guatemala; resting after four days trekking through the Andes Mountains and arriving at Machu Picchu in Peru and the collection finishes with the whole family watching their first sunset in Portugal.
Tom said: "Looking at the Brighton photo I just knew it'd make a great series. Verity and I had been going out for about six months but I had a feeling we'd be together for a long time.
"We were also really keen to start travelling so I knew we'd have lots of adventures together."
The Robinson's travels have taken them to Australia, taking a boat trip around the Whitsunday Islands despite it being stinger season (the seas are swarming with killer jellyfish) and travelling in their beloved campervan.
Describing one of their adventures, Tom said: "After a long day driving we couldn't find an...

'I'm going to be a dad' - photographer captures friends and family's reactions to the news, London, Britain - 06 Jan 2012

Max. The usher at the wedding we went to. He really doesn't like this photo.
'I'm going to be a Dad' - Photos of Relatives Priceless Reactions
This collection of photographs shows a man's family and friends reacting to news that he is going to be a Dad.
Tom Robinson, 30, is a self-confessed gossip. He can't keep a secret to himself so when he found out his wife was pregnant he couldn't even wait until the three month scan before he told people.
After a couple of weeks he broke the news to his boss, which was received by a priceless reaction.
Instantly the London-based photographer knew he had to capture the reactions of his close family and friends and document it in a photo album.
He explained: "Verity and I hadn't been trying for a baby and I was 29, which for London is fairly young to have a child, so I knew I'd get some good reactions."
Tom and his wife then continued to tell their close relatives and friends their good news, all of it caught on camera.
His favourite reaction was from his parents: "They had just brought a new campervan and were very eager to give us a guided tour," explained Tom.
"I said I would take a quick photo of them sitting in the back and then told them our good news.
"My mum was so shocked she let out a little scream."
Another reaction that will stay in Tom's memory is that of his old school friend Pete.
"When I told him he just stared at me for ages with a bemused look on his face and then eventually brought a bottle of champagne to celebrate."
Other highlights in the photo album are the reactions of their closest group of friends who were told while in an Indian restaurant; Verity's brothers who turned away from their video game for a second to register the news then carried on playing and Harwin, Tom's old work colleague who looked at him in disgust...

Boxing Hares, females fight off males during mating season, island of Texel, Holland - Mar 2012
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Richard Peters / Rex Features (1667663a)
Female hare fights off the males advances for mating rights, taken on the Island of Texel.
The main images depict a battle that started out far off in a field as the male chased the female around, before the action ended up on a huge mud pile which can be seen in the background of one of the images, and is the focus of the main fighting photo., FULL COPY
Hopping Mad: Female Hare Fights Off Admirers
These images show a brutal boxing match between two brown hares.
Traditionally a sign spring is on its way, the female hare fights off the mating urges of the males by standing on their hind legs and 'boxing' with their front paws.
The sight of these 'mad March hares' boxing caused British wildlife photographer Richard Peters to pick up his camera and capture the ferocious battle in action, which at one point saw the female having to fend off up to five males at once.
Mr Peters said: "The battle got quite viscous with fur flying everywhere.
"It started off with one male hare chasing the female around a field before the action ended up on a huge mud pile.
"At one point the female hare was up against five males, which highlights the chaos of this time of year in the life of a hare."
The contests were long believed to be between two male hares fighting for dominance to mate with a female.
But in fact the disputes are usually a reluctant female that is not yet ready to mate and tries to repel the unwanted advances of an overexcited male, which is part of the brown hare's courtship ritual.
Mr Peters took the photographs of the hares while visiting the Island of Texel in the province of North Holland.
Texel has one of the highest populations of hare in Europe because it is a small island and they cannot escape.
