July 29, 2016 - Tokyo, Japan: At the Roppongi Hills building complex, a summer festival called Summer Station is on from July 16 to August 28. The main event of this festival is 66 life size Doraemon statues on display in an outdoor plaza called 66 Plaza. Doraemon is the lovable animation and Manga character who is a robotic cat from the 22nd century, sent to aid a pre-teen boy named Nobita. This Japanese creation was first introduced in 1969 as a Manga series by the writing team Fujiko Fujio. To date 1,345 stories have been published by Shogakukan Inc. In 1979, Shin-Ei Animation studios began producing a TV series on Doraemon which ended in 2005 after 1787 episodes aired. The Doraemon media franchise is now owned by TV Asahi which has adapted the character into films, video games, a musical, and merchandising unit. Doraemon also has a large fan base outside Japan including mainland Asia, Europe and the USA where it is broadcast by the Boomerang TV network. The name Doraemon is play on words that means stray, as in a stray street cat. (Torin Boyd/Polaris). (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) *** Local Caption *** 05574050
