  • The Quirky Welsh Town of Portmeirion

The Quirky Welsh Town of Portmeirion
July 7, 2007, Porthmadog, Gwynedd, Wales: Portmeirion, in North Wales, is a resort, where no one has ever lived. A self-taught Welsh architect named Sir Clough Williams-Ellis built it out of architectural salvage between the 1920s and 1970s, loosely based on his memories of trips to Portofino. Including a pagoda-shaped Chinoiserie gazebo, some Gothic obelisks, eucalyptus groves, a crenellated castle, a Mediterranean bell tower, a Jacobean town hall, and an Art Deco cylindrical watchtower. He kept improving Portmeirion until his death in 1978, age 94. It faces an estuary where at low tide one can walk across the sands and look out to sea. At high tide, the sea is lapping onto the shores. Every building in the village is either a shop, restaurant, hotel or self-catering accomodation. The village is booked out at high season, with numerous wedding receptions at the weekends. Very popular amongst the English and Welsh holidaymakers. Many who return to the same abode season after season. Hundreds of tourists visit every day, walking around the ornamental gardens, cobblestone paths, and shopping, eating ice-creams, or walking along the woodland and coastal paths, amongst a colourful assortment of hydrangea, rhododendrons, tree ferns and redwoods. The resort boasts two high class hotels, a la carte menus, a swimming pool, a lifesize concrete boat, topiary, pools and wishing wells. The creator describes the resort as "a home for fallen buildings," and its ragged skyline and playful narrow passageways which were meant to provide "more fun for more people." It does just that.///The swimming pool with flowering hydrangeas. and the village behind on the hill. the estuary is on the right hand side. Credit: Nigel Dickinson / Polaris

Barely had the headline appeared on the news when the Kate and Wills souvenir industry leapt into life.

Just 24 hours after the news broke, one can sip from a commemorative mug, wear the t-shirt, pin on a badge, use the keyring or even don a Kate Middleton thimble.

eBay souvenirs range from crude 99p badges to the aforementioned Kate thimbles (current bid GBP 10.43) - which were actually originally released in 2008.

    Cape Province, South Africa
A WORLD OF DIVERSITY AND DIFFERENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA

From vast plains to rolling mountains and golden beaches to barren deserts, South Africa is a vast country of huge diversity.

And its bustling cities are just as varied as its landscapes - from the likes of hustling Johannesburg to the cosmopolitan Cape Town.

The country is renowned for its wines and is the world's largest producer of gold.

In 2010, it will also play host to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the first time the contest has been held on the African continent.

Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa and is the capital of the Western Cape Province.

It is also the legislative capital of the country, being the location of parliament and other government buildings.

One of these is the old city hall, a large Edwardian building in the city centre that was built in 1905.

It was here, on 11 February, 1990, that Nelson Mandela made his first public speech just hours after being release from prison.

Cape Town is noted for its architectural heritage, with the highest density of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world.

One of its latest constructions is slightly different however - the main stadium that will host matches during the World Cup.

Known as the 'Mother City', the Cape Town metropolitan area covers a vast sprawl; however, the city centre or 'bowl' is relatively small.

It is nestled between Table Bay and the Table Mountain range, which provides a dramatic backdrop to the city.

The flat-topped Table Mountain, along with other famous peaks such as Lion's Head and Apostles Mountain, form part of the Table Mountain National Park.

This area is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top of Table Mountain.

Its main feature is what gi...

Saint Tropez in danger of becoming the 'French Ibiza, Saint Tropez, France - Aug 2009
SAINT TROPEZ BATTLES TO BRING BACK THE GLAMOUR

St Tropez's mayor has gone on a glamour offensive over fears that the exclusive resort is being turned into the 'French Ibiza'.

Traditionally the tiny port has been the haunt of the rich, famous and sophisticated.

However, a new breed of tourist has led to an upsurge in tacky souvenirs and vulgar displays.

Up to 100,000 day trippers regularly pack into the small seafront town.

And while super yachts can still be found in its old port and sports cars drive along its roads, there has been another, less welcome, intrusion.

Now tourists come to gawp at the riches around them and snap up t-shirts, shot glasses and even condoms that bear the message 'I Love Saint-Tropez'.

    HAVING FUN IN HAVANA

Electric and unique, Havana is a city like no other - guaranteed to offer the traveller a host of lively and colourful sights and sensations.

It became a museum during the years following the Cuban revolution and its exhibits are largely devoted to the revolutionary war.

Behind the building lies the Granma Memorial, a large glass enclosure which houses the Granma, the yacht which took Fidel Castro and his revoluti...
