Endellion Quartet review – impeccable group celebrate 40 years with striking new music
The Endellion String Quartet perform at the Wigmore Hall in London. The Endellion String Quartet is a British string quartet named after St Endellion in Cornwall.
The quartet was formed in 1979 and has been 'Quartet in Residence' at Cambridge University since 1992. It has an extensive discography and appears in concert halls around the world. The quartet received the 1996 award for 'Best Chamber Ensemble' from the Royal Philharmonic Society. They have released their recording of the cycle of Beethoven's quartets, string quintets and quartet fragments for Warner Classics and Jazz.

Sotheby's Offer Finest Viola By Antonio Stradivari
Sotheby's and Ingles & Hayday announced yesterday that they are to offer for sale the finest Stradivari viola in existence.
The 'Macdonald' Viola by Antonio Stradivari between 1644 and 1737 is expected to sell in excess of $45 million.
The viola will be offered through a sealed bid process later this spring. Stradivari is renowned for his perfection in the field of musical instruments, and violas are his rarest with only ten surviving. Throughout his career he also made 600 violins and 50 cellos.
Sotheby's says: "A Stradivari viola is the ultimate prize for collectors and the 'Macdonald' of 1719 is one of only two violas made during Stradivari's 'Golden Period' (1700 - 1720), which saw the production of his finest instruments."
David Redden, Sotheby's Vice Chairman, commented: "Every field is defined by one outstanding masterpiece which casts its shadow not only on its own domain but far beyond. The instruments of Stradivari are in a class of their own among the pinnacles of human craftsmanship and the 'Macdonald' Viola stands at the unquestioned summit."
In terms of beauty of appearance and playing quality Sotheby's explained that the viola is in great condition.
David Aaron Carpenter, the virtuoso violist who will play the instrument at Sotheby's in New York and Paris, commented: "This viola represents the pinnacle of human achievement in instrument-making, and it is in incredibly good condition. Almost as though you ordered a viola from Stradivarius and 300 years later he handed it you."
