LA: NEW ORLEANS HYATT HOTEL DAMAGED BY HURRICANE KATRINA
28 August 2005 - New Orleans, LA - Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, Louisiana. The Hyatt hotel lies in ruins as the storm smashed out most of the glass. Hurricane Katrina tore into Louisiana on Monday, although the massive storm appeared to spare low-lying New Orleans a feared deathblow and delivered much of its force to neighboring Mississippi and Alabama. Historic New Orleans, which has long feared extinction if a massive hurricane made a direct hit, endured extensive damage from Katrina's 135 mph (216 kph) winds after the storm came ashore from the Gulf of Mexico and roared along the coast. By noon CDT Katrina's winds had decreased to 105 mph (170 kph), a Category 2 storm, with higher gusts and its center was moving ashore at the Louisiana-Mississippi border.

The Atchafalaya river is close to record water levels along the levee walls up and down her west bank levee. Driving and parking on the levee is forbidden, but many do. Police and members of the Louisiana National Guard patrol the levees and speak with offenders and ask them to move their vehicles. Crawfishermen have lost thousands of traps due to waters rising 10ft and higher in many of their traditional fishing holes and water presses against vulnerable levee walls. Another 2ft of water is expected. The crawfishermen await a bountiful harvest following the opening of the Morganza spillway complex to ease flood pressure on the Mississippi River.
