Sisters Doing It For Themselves
Set deep in the lush green countryside of East Sussex the Monastery of the Visitation is home to the largest Order of contemplative nuns in the world.
As the sun rises over the building it illuminates the neat rows of carrots, potatoes and tomatoes that line the two acre garden that resides within the Monastery's walls.
In the adjacent orchard, amid the apple and pear trees, several sheep contently graze - doing a better job than any lawnmower of keeping the grass trimmed.
On any day of the week the 13 nuns who call the monastery home - whose ages range from mid-30s to mid-90s - can be seen bustling amongst the greenery in their blue working habits - pruning here, weeding there and even chopping up wood for the winter.
Thanks to their efforts they are now almost self-sufficient in vegetables, soft fruit and salad - supplementing their hard earned gems with a weekly shop at Tescos.
"It's been a good harvest," says Sister Josephine Margaret, 78, who runs the garden. "Not as good as last year. Last year was very good. But it's been good."
What's more, she says, not once did she have to pray to St Fiarce - the patron saint of gardeners - even though field mice and rabbits remained just as active this year.
It is little wonder that the garden has flourished under the tender ministrations of Sister Josephine Margaret. She is, after all, a professional gardener.
She has degrees in biology and zoology from Bedford College, London University and also worked at the Royal Horticultural Society's Wisley Gardens in Surrey before becoming a nun almost 50 years ago.
Today, thanks largely to Sister Josephine, not only do the nuns grow much of their own food they also grow most of the flowers they use to decorate their Chapel.
