FEATURE - Bodie: Goldgräber Geisterstadt
Bridgeport, California, USA. Welcome to Bodie, or at least what reamins of it. Nestled into the Sierra Nevada mountain range at over 8000ft elevation, this ghost town was once one of the largest gold rush mining communities on the West Coast. Gold was discovered here in 1859 by Waterman S. Bodey and by the 1880s had grown to a peak population of around 8000 residents. Up to 30 lurcrative gold mines and associated industires opereated here, as well as 60 saloons, prostitute 'cribs' and opium dens on the seedier side of town. Mining decined in the 1900s with the last remainimg mine closing in 1942. The site was purchased by California State Parks in 1962 and has been preserved in a state of "arrested decay" ever since. Small enough to be used legally on the pavement or inside a shop, the GBP 5,500 QTvan is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: caravans; queuing and tea. The tiny caravan is ideally suited to queuing overnight for the sales or tickets for Wimbledon fortnight, and boasts tea-making facilities to make any long wait bearable.According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the QTvan is ideal for the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover, and who face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat. Spokesman for the ETA, Yannick Read, said: (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

Prospect Cottage, Dungeness, Kent, Britain - 01 Aug 1999
Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent, home of the late British playwright and filmmaker, Derek Jarman (1942-1994). Jarman was drawn to Dungeness by its desolate character; after being diagnosed as HIV positive, he devoted his private life to the creation of a garden at Prospect Cottage, a fisherman's house on a huge bank of shingle on the Kent coast.
