The Lightning Bolt
THE LIGHTNING BOLT
Now looking to become as much a Jamaican household name as Bob Marley or Marcus Garvey, Usain Bolt has taken the Beijing Olympics by storm.
His achievements of winning gold and breaking the world records in the 100m and 200m finals have somehow managed to overshadow even the heroics of American swimmer Michael Phelps and his record-breaking tally of gold medals in the pool.
Bolt was born August 21st 1986 and grew up in Trelawny, Jamaica, the son of Jennifer and Wellesley Bolt and brother to Sherine. As a child his first love was cricket in which he first achieved success playing in annual national primary schools' meetings for his parish. His height and speed made him look set for a possible career as a fast bowler.
However, upon his entry to William Knibb Memorial High School his cricket coach noted his exceptional speed around the pitch and urged him to take up track and field events under the coaching of Pablo McNeil and Dwayne Barrett, who enhanced his athletic abilities.
By the time he was 15, Bolt had already reached his peak height of 6ft 5in, making him literally stand out from his peers. He was spurred on by an idolisation of Jamaican athletic heroes Herb McKenley and Don Quarrie, as well as his admiration for the great Michael Johnson of the USA.
What followed was a rise to the top of his profession almost as quick as his speed on the track itself. As a junior sprinter he began shattering records left, right and centre, first on a national level and then in world championships.
American colleges offered Bolt track scholarships on the strength of his performances, but the teenager from Trelawny refused them all, stating that he was content to stay in his homeland of Jamaica.
