When it came to this particular animal, it was enjoying a good back scratch against a handy tree when it paused and raised a paw as though waving at Tom. Tom comments: "After many years of wanting to I headed out to Finland in order to photograph brown bears in the wild. "After 8 hours of waiting, at around 11pm at night, this large male bear decided he had an itch. Noticing his direct approach to the tree I changed my settings and swung the camera into portrait mode in order to get his whole body in the shot. A daredevil photographer has gone to extraordinary lengths to take pictures inside waves.
Ray Collins' breathtaking shots reveal the giant rollers in all their glory.
The 28-year-old takes incredible risks to get the perfect picture of the walls of water as they hurtle towards the shore.
Armed with a camera, protected with a special waterproofing casing, he and his surfer friends take on waves as high as 15 feet.
They are towed in to the wave with a jet ski and then have to quickly get in to position to capture it as it starts to break.
One incredible picture shows Ray's friend Eddie Blackwell as he surfs through an enormous tunnel of water near Sydney, Australia.
Another shows the photographer dwarfed by a huge wave near his home in Woolagong
Ray said: "You need the wave to be perfect and your positioning to be perfect for it to work.
"It can be pretty dangerous, I've been hit on the head a few times with my camera and it's not a nice feeling when you're underwater, getting thrashed about.
"It can take a lot of beatings and steep learning curves before you start to see results but I hope my pictures are worth it in the end.
"The reaction has been really positive. The shots gives people who don't surf a chance to see what we see."
Ray said he had been fascinated with the sea from an early age but started focusing on his photography after an accident while working in a coal mine.
He explained: "I've grown up in and around the ocean my whole life and always had an interest in photography but the turning point was when I was injured in a coal mine.
"I had a workplace accident and injured my knee pretty badly and I couldn't walk or do much else.

Forecasters may be predicting a big freeze this Christmas, but Santa is clearly enjoying the sun down under.
These beautifully shot underwater pictures were taken by top photographer Mark Tipple on Australia's iconic Bondi Beach.
Mark has become famous for his photos of waves underwater and decided to shoot a special set for Christmas.
The 29-year-old said: "The Australian winter caused us a fair bit of grief, from freezing water to erratic conditions, so with summer it is perfect, and I wanted to use the Christmas theme.
"I asked a good friend to dress up as Santa and headed into the water with my specially made camera housed in a waterproof box.
"We received some weird looks and the light was beginning to go so we had to work fast.
"We shot for about 30 minutes before the Santa suit fell apart and the sun dropped behind the hill.
"The water is pretty clear at Sydney's beaches and the shoot turned out pretty well."
Mark, from Sydney, added: "In 29 years I've only had one Christmas that wasn't either summer or beach related, with a barbecue outside or cricket on the beach.
"Last Christmas was around 28 degrees in Sydney, although there were a few rain clouds the beaches were packed with people enjoying the day, it's definitely in contrast to England."
